THE TYPEFACE
Bold 30pt

The Letter Gothic is a monospaced sans-serif

typeface. It was designed for IBM between 1956 and
62 for its only use on the Selectric Typewriter.
This typeface can be useful for technical
documentation or tabular work. Inspired on the
Optima and adapted for an informatic use, fonts such
as New Letter Gothic, FF Letter Gothic or Olive
Green Mono have derived from it.

TYPOGRAPHIC USE:
This typeface is used for content texts, where big
paragraphs can be found. Somehow this typeface is
not the newest within the classes of typefaces of
Letter Gothic but it counts with a great legibility.

USE & CHARACTERISTICS

Bold, 30pt

TYPOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS:
Since it was designed specifically for the Selectric
Typewriters the space between letters is only one
(hence it is called monospread)
The geometric structure is formed by orthogonal
lines. The strokes keep their thickness and the
terminals are completely straight.

DESIGNER
Roger Robertson is the designer of
the successful monospaced Letter
Gothic.
Inspired by the Optima(a typeface
designed by Hermann Zapf), Roger
Robertson created the Letter
Gothic with the purpose of making
it more legible, that is why he
eliminated the modulation from the
original typeface and augmented
the ring of letters such as b, d,
p or q. In order to compensate
that augmentation he had to
condense the letters, which also
balanced them regarding to the
monospaced typeface.
At the same time, he converted the
buttonhole of the G into an open
one. Also turned the slanted ant-
lers of the M into totally verti-
cal ones.
Although at first glance it might
not look as if Optima and Letter
Gothic had much in common, the de-
signer really did inspire himself
on the Optima.
