ABSTRACT
Introduction: In orthodontics, age is an important factor in determining the prognosis and treatment plan,
especially for patients with insufficient or excessive mandibular and maxillary growth requiring growth
modification, therefore treatment must be started early before puberty so that growth can be directed so that
orthodontic treatment becomes a viable option more optimal. To measure the level of bone development and
maturity in a patient, the biological age must be determined. Biological age can be determined by radiography of
bones and teeth, or the onset of puberty. The skeletal maturation is an important parameter in maintenance during
growth time, which is determined by level of maturation or markers in the skeletal system, is widely accepted due
to its advantages over other methods. Cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) assessment in one of those method.
Objective: To analyze skeletal age with CVM, its advantages and disadvantages compared to other methods.
Result: CVM assessment, which determines skeletal maturation by ossification events and morphological
changes of cervical vertebra, has been increasingly used by clinicians. Conclusion: CVM assessment, which are
many times ignored by orthodontists who are not familiar to its analysis, have been increasingly used to assess
skeletal maturation of the individual because it comprises an easy assessment method and eliminates the need for
an additional radiograph (hand and wrist) for such ends.
