Activity 1: My idea of counsellor
My counsellor should have a collaborative effort between him/her and
the client. He should help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause
emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and
promote behaviour change and optimal mental health.

Activity 2: Know your Counsellor

1. Describe the rights, responsibilities, and accountabilities of counselors.

As state registered and licensed
professional, Counsellor are
protected. They are governed by
scientific theories practices and
process as well as the professional
standards and ethics.
The counsellor are responsible for
the practices of their profession in
accordance with their mandates
and professional guidelines and
ethics.
They are also accountable to their
clients the professional body and
the government. It is critical that
the counsellor and the client fully
understand the nature of the
concerns, which leads to a contract
to take action on a manually
agreed upon problem.

2. List down three (3) ethical and unethical behaviours of counsellors.

Being trustworthy: honouring the trust
placed in the practitioner (also referred to as
fidelity)
Autonomy: Respect for the client’s right to
be self-governing
Beneficence: a commitment to promoting the
client’s well-being
Charging fees for private counselling to
those who are entitled to free service,
through the counsellors employing
institutions; and/or using one’s job to recruit
clients for a private practice.
Lack of integrity, moral commitment and
sound professional judgement to adhere to
acceptable standards of right and wrong
actions.
Incompetence, that is inadequate knowledge
and absences of skills necessary for
professional behaviour .

3. As a future counsellor, how would you exhibit or embody the ethical standards
of your profession?
 - As a future counsellor, I will practice and enhance personal ethics because these
are the moral guidelines that can help me through tough situations and making the best decision. It can
develop my career and handle many different workplace scenarios. I can also develop a clear and
effective personal ethics statement that outlines the value that I can practice in the professional setting.
