Session 2: The Power of the Ordinary

It’s easy to talk about what we know and love

We’ve identified that some subjects

can be more difficult to discuss than others.
In this session we find that it’s much easier
to talk about subjects which are close to our heart.

The extraordinary ordinary

Simple, unremarkable details of your own life can be fascinating to another person. Your ordinary
can be somebody else’s extraordinary. It doesn’t really matter what the subject is: if you’re excited
about it, it’s easy for you to talk about it. We don’t need to be gifted orators, humorous storytellers or
naturally chatty – just ourselves.

True or false?
Take a few minutes to write down three short statements about yourself, two true and one false. Try
to think of unusual facts, to make it harder for people to guess which is which.

Each group member in turn reads out their three statements. The rest of the group try to spot which
is the false one.

Windows on God
Each one of us is unique. Nobody shares our story or our unique perspective on the world. Similarly,
there will be different aspects of God’s character that are particularly meaningful to each of us – but
may seem less significant for another person, or for ourselves at a different stage of our lives.

Which aspects of God’s character have been particularly important to you during your life?

 Mercy and forgiveness  Justice

 Love and compassion  Strength and power

 Creativity  Majesty

 Parental care/fatherhood  Other . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Looking forward
We have seen that each one of us is unique. There is nobody in the world who shares our unique
blend of DNA, personality and personal history. Our unique mix of interests might seem ordinary to
us, but could well seem extraordinary to another person. We also found that it’s easier to talk about
things we care about. In the next session we extend this theme of uniqueness by looking at our
distinctive faith journeys.
