Her sampler represents a vibrant history that encompasses family education and religion. As we explore the hidden clues of this small English sampler to Jearn more about its maker, youll sce, as I did, that this sampler emudes a subtle sophistication far beyond Alice’ 49 years. It portrays the successful ambition of standard ccucation and religious learning. Alice was born in 1823 to Jonathan and Alice (Swift) Park, and was christened on Sept. 7, 1823, in the town of | ‘Wigan, just outside the city of Manchester and within the boundaries ofthe historic county of Lancashire. Alice married Robert Henry Josling Smith in Wiggin on Jan. 29, 1856, and they had one son. ‘There were 10 siblings in the Park family Alice's brother Henry Park apprenticed and worked in the offices and ‘warehouse of the family’s iron trade business, located in Wiend, a street in Wigan, and at the forge and works on ‘School Common. Henry made his own contribution to ‘Wigan by serving as mayor from 1882 to 1887. He was the incumbent mayor during the celebration of Queen Victoria’ Golden Jubilee on June 20, 1887. Alice's sampler is executed in cross stitch worked over two threads and tent stitch worked over one thread. Alice’s family apparently had means, so she had access to fine stitching materials, “The top half ofthe sampler is what is known as a “marking sampler,” highlighted by alphabets stitched in uppercase and. lowercase, and numbers; this emphasized that the maker had successfully learned her letters and numbers “The bottom half of Alice’s sampler contains a verse from well-known hymn, Selected lines from the Bible or hymns cor other moral texts allowed young sampler makers to reflect and ponder religious and ethical sentiments. In addition, hhymns were a means of teaching and affirming biblical truth. Furthermore, the selected verses of our foremothers aide us jn understanding the personal qualities that were important to the maker and her family ‘This sampler honors a famous poet and hymn writer of the time period, William Cowper (pronounced *Cooper”), who lived 1731-1800. The words that Alice stitched compose 40 Jus CrsuSieh JUSECROSSSTITCHCOM. Cetober 2021 the first verse from his hymn, ZBere Isa Fountain Filled With Blood. Cowper stepped onto the world stage working with hymn writer John Newton (1725-1807), the composer of | Anaczing Grace. Newton inwited Cowper to contribute to a hymnbook he was compiling called Oiney Hs. This book of 348 hymns became one of the most important contributions to musical worship in evangelical history. Every hymn has a story, and Cowper's featured hymn testifies of his final peace with his Savior. The hymn stands out as one of the anthems of the church and a monument to the sovereign grace and redeeming love of God. ‘Alice chose green and copper threads to highlight her age, the date and verse. The color palette mirrors Cowper's hymn. “The green silk threads represent faith, immortality, joy and renewal. The significance of the copper threads is twof itilluminates the autumnal outdoor elements mirrored by the date of the sampler and is symbolic of security, strength and emotional endurance. These hues of copper also ignite motivation and uplift a fillen spirit. The green and copper shades render a subtle sophistication and unique beauty, purposely highlighting leter and verse, rather than creating an elaborate display. ‘The words ofthe hymnal verse stitched by Alice Park not only sesonated in 1832, but its universal message continues to echo into our present day as well. “Through the survival of Alice Park’s sampler, we once again are provided a gift to catch a glimpse of a stitching foremother’ family heritage. With some research, we can Jean more about the town and country of her residence, and we can glean something about her education and the ‘moral compass that impacted this young woman during, her lifetime from that which is expressed by her in these treasured stitches of textile at. Jost as Alice stitched the first verse of William Cowper's hymn in 1832, the Sampler Sleuth comes full circle and honors Cowper 189 years later, by closing with another verse from the same hymn, Cowper was a sensitive soul who lived with anxiety and depression throughout his lifetime that may have resulted in a speech impediment, which makes the words from the last stanza of his hymn all the more precious.
