Proponents of Language Functions:

 Roman Jakobson
 Bronislaw Malinowski
 Michael Halliday
 Geoffrey Finch
This written report focuses on Michael Halliday Language functions framework.

Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday was born on the 13th of April 1925 and
died on the 15th of April 2018. He is the proponent of Systemic Functional Linguistics
(SFL) Model of Language. Systemic Functional Grammar
Language as a semiotic system, "not in the sense of a system of signs, but a
systemic resource for meaning".
Language as a "meaning potential"; "how people exchange meanings by
'languaging'"
Generalist; "to look at language from every possible vantage point",
"wander[ing] the highways and byways of language"

In Michael Halliday’s framework he proposed that there are seven (7) functions
of language and these are the; Instrumental, regulatory, interactional, personal,
heuristic, imaginative and representational.
What is Regulatory function?
-Language used to influence the behavior of others.
-Concerned with persuading/ commanding/ requesting other people to do
things you want.
-The use of language is to guide and tell others what to do.
According to Halliday, language becomes regulatory when the language is used
to influence the behavior of others, meaning the use of language is to regulate or to
tell others what to do. That is why in this framework, regulatory is also concerned with
persuading, commanding, and requesting other people to do the things that you want.
For example, in a classroom setting, when the teacher gives an instruction
regarding to the activity. With that, the use of language becomes regulatory, because
the teacher instructed and give a direction to the students.
Other examples:
-Requesting your sibling to buy you a food.
-Making rules in game
-Giving a policy
-Teaching is also, an example of regulatory
In short, in this function of language the use of language is to control.
