Reading
Environmental art at its best
Andy Goldsworthy is a British artist,
sculptor, and photographer who uses
things that he finds in the natural world to
make his art. He uses colorful flowers,
snow, ice, sand, rocks, and anything he
can find in nature to make his original
outdoor sculptures and works of art. He
creates his artwork in beautiful natural
places, such as forests, mountains, lakes,
or beaches. He has created artwork in the
U.K., Japan, Australia, the U.S., Canada,
and many other countries.
Andy only uses his hands, and the natural
things that he finds, when he makes his
sculptures. His art only lasts for a few
weeks, days, or hours. Some of his art
pieces slowly disappear, because he
makes them only with natural products and
always leaves them outside. His work
might be a delicate sculpture that he
makes with flowers or pieces of ice, or
an enormous sculpture made with rocks.
Andy wants to understand nature by
working with it. He enjoys working with his
hands and being outside in different types
of weather: rain, sun, wind, or snow. He
doesn’t want his work to last because the
natural world is always changing. This is
an important part of his work; he wants
people to understand that many things in
life do not last.
So he takes photographs of his sculptures
just after he has finished making them. His
photographs are as important as his
sculptures because they are the only way
that most people can see his work. Andy
feels that if he moved his sculptures into
a gallery, they would lose their meaning.
