Currently, the diagnosis of autism is based on behaviors shared with other diagnoses. The
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) claims that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a
developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior and is characterized by the
following [21]:
• Difficulty with communication and interaction with people
• Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors
• Symptoms that impair ability to function properly in school, work, and other areas of life.
These criteria are so overly broad as to be meaningless. None of them applies exclusively to
autism. Furthermore, autism is not a developmental disorder but rather an inherent brain
anomaly.
