1. Important Information on Operation

1.1 Key-operated switch.
The key-operated switch is used for switching on and off the function of
the keyboard (not of the measuring unit!).

1.2 Help function.

The operating instructions are integrated into the software of the measuring

instrument. After pressing the key, a text is displayed on the screen in

addition to the readout, which explains the instantaneous status and describes
the key operations which are required and/or possible to continue the dialog
and the balancing task and to call another function. When pressing SF
additionally in the HELP mode all special functions that can be called by SF are
listed on the screen - irrespective of whether they can be actually called or not
at the moment. The instantaneous display from the balancing dialog is retained
during the HELP mode and represented in scaled-down form but completely at
the left upper edge of the screen.
The instantaneous display is meanwhile shown in a reduced size but
completely at the upper lefthand edge on the screen.
During the HELP phase, the reduced screen display is frozen.
The text pages are numbered. The numbering is used exclusively for clear
identification of screen pages for questions etc. and does not say anything
about the order of the program flow.

Exit from HELP with or .

1.3 Special functions.

Several special functions are integrated, some of these generally and others
optionally. These special functions can be called up in the dialog (so-called
branching point) where the explanations of the key functions can be called with

the key. Such a "branching point" is, e.g., the status existing before
"starting the drive unit for the first balancing run"; in other words: When the
rotor data of any rotor are displayed on the screen and the prompt for input of
the rotor number has been completed by any special function can
be called up in general.
Steps for selecting this branching point (examples):
RESET
By switching on or via : operator's name, file call, rotor number
After termination of a balancing procedure:

another rotor of the same type, rotor no. or

another rotor of another type, file call, rotor no.

The keys and key sequences to be operated for calling the special functions
are listed below.

The storage module of the measuring unit is fed by an installed long-life

battery. Unfortunately the time of service of these batteries cannot very
precisely be foreseen. In order to assure protection against total loss of data
in case of unexpected failure of the battery it is recommended to print the
rotor data and other important data immediately after their entry and file
SF
them: , print data file.

1.4 Special calls

1.4.1 Preparation of a new, modified rotor file from an existing rotor
file:
Call up the existing file,
acknowledge "ROTOR NUMBER" with (= general branching point),
modify the data as intended,
press key ,
enter the file name: the same name overwrites an old file, a new name
opens a new file.
complete with key .

1.4.2 Deletion of a rotor file:

Proceed as described in section 1.4.1. As a matter of course, no data need be
modified.

After input of the name of the rotor file to be deleted press key .

1.5 Compensation - indexing

COMP INDEX
The keys and are identical; in the HELP-Function there is
COMP INDEX
always , but there are keyboards, where this key is called .

Adhere to compensation values (Y/N):

This question only arises when in the rotor data file a compensation to be
effected (indexing, key, simple compensation) is included.
"N": The compensation values are only filed in the current file; they remain
available as long as this file is the current file (e.g. after depressing ),
even if the measuring unit is switched off in the meantime.
"Y": The compensation values are taken and included in the rotor data file;
i. e., all further rotors of this file are balanced in the normal mode
applying these compensation values, even if other types of rotor are
processed in the meantime.

Deleting the compensation values in the file:

COMP COMP
Depress , select "0" and depress , depress once again,

select the preceding mode of compensation and depress ,

by means of store file again giving it its former name.

2. Key functions
RESET
Restart of dialog.

A message may be stored and recalled with this key. After power
Off/On, the message is again displayed upon completion of
instrument "selftest".
SF CALC
, Subsequent processing (option). If subsequent processing proce-
dures stored in a rotor file are to be activated, call file by means of
these keys.
Average readout over time (On/Off).
With this function switched on the measuring values are currently
picked up and integrated into the average. This leads to a very
steady indication though initially it might be very unsteady (to
recognize especially in vector mode).

, Low Dampening.

, High Dampening.
E1 is the normal dampening mode where the corner frequency of the
low-pass filter allows a fast building-up of indication. E2 mode
activates a low-pass filter with a lower corner frequency resulting in
steadier indication in cases where external noise/vibration might
otherwise disturb the indication. The current mode is indicated on the
bottom line of the display.
Storage of active rotor file data as modified using dialog, overwrite of
existing stored data with new actual data or delete file (using ).

Display the contents of active (current) rotor file.

Vector indication (On/Off).

SF
, Automatic readout retention (On/Off).
When on, this occurs once speed window is reached and prescribed
averaging time, if any, has elapsed.
SF
, The entire rotor file data is printed.

Print screen (hardcopy)

Displays list of all stored rotor files one page at a time.

SF D
, Resets paper to "Top of Form" after insertion of new continuous form
paper. Do not use with perforated "Top of Form" sensing paper.
SF F
, Quasi-fixed amplification. There are infrequent occasions when the
'signal to noise ratio' of true unbalance information versus non
desired noise changes drastically over the measuring time period.
When the noise level is relatively low, instrument sensitivity will scale
to a high sensitivity and start sampling data. If the noise level
increases to a point where saturation of amplifier component may
occur, the instrument will stop sampling data while switching to a
coarser sensitivity level. This process may repeat and can be very
disconcerting to the operator.
Activating this function stabilizes instrument sensitivity at a level
where up and down switching is eliminated. This feature must be
invoked each time the readout retention is released whereupon the
symbol 'F' will be displayed at the lower edge of the CRT. Upon next
release of readout retention, automatic control of instrument
sensitivity is restored.

SF H
, Fixed amplification - ON or OFF - for vector display only:
Input sensitivity and scaling of display which normally adjust
automatically in accordance with the respective unbalance, can be
permanently adjusted. The display then shows "FIX" and the status
line reads "H". In the case of overflow of the display, the spot on the
vectormeter starts flashing, in the case of overflow of the input
amplifiers a flashing 0 appears in the status line. Scaling and
amplification can be increased or decreased by means of .
SF
, Call of the calibration dialogue.
SF
, Setup data of the balancing machine. Level 2 password required.
Change of several presettings, e.g. level 1 password, headline of
printout.
SF
, Storage of current rotor data file including compensation values prior
to turning off instrument at end of work day. Using this sequence you
will be asked whether you wish to use stored data upon next power
on of instrument.
SF
, Input and printout of up to 3 lines of comments.

Terminate input using to send text to printer. Repeat as required

for more comment lines.
SF
, Hardware Test. This calls up main menu of test program.
F
Input or change of setup mode (1 through 6).
SF
, Change rotor file while retaining data.
If, after completing a measuring run, it is discovered that the incorrect
rotor file is in use then the correct rotor file may be called thereby
saving the entering of new data or making another run.
B
Rotor dimension a. Rotor dimension b. Rotor dimension c.

3. General hints for key compensation

3.1 General
It is the function of this device to spare the insertion of the key during
balancing. This is particularly economical for balancing with half the key, which
will soon be prescribed.
The device is useful for balancing in series.
The angle reference system must not be displaced between the setting with the
first rotor and with other rotors. It is to be adjusted to the groove of the key -
thus either the key has to be scanned or the angle reference (scanning mark)
has to be attached in the same angle with reference to the groove.
When balancing on auxiliary shafts the angle reference should be adjusted to
the latter.
Balancing in components with key compensation is only economical when the
angular position of the components with reference to the key is constant for all
rotors of a type.

3.2 Balancing of rotors with their own shaft according to the rule
"half the key" or "full key"
Two runs are performed for the first rotor, firstly with key (half or full) inserted,
then without it. Subsequently the other rotors are balanced without key. The
part missing is taken into consideration in the calculation.

3.3 Balancing of rotors on auxiliary shafts according to the rule "half

the key"

Shaft has 1 groove, rotor has 1 groove:

Shaft is sufficiently exempt from run-out 1
--> Balance only rotor with half the key.
--> Insert complete key and balance rotors.
Key compensation is not used.
Shaft has more run-out :
--> Insert half the key into shaft and, if necessary, fasten it temporarily.
--> Measure rotor on "indexing". Thereby the error of the shaft is
compensated.

Caution! Rotor must not turn inadvertently. Place grooves onto each other
resp. during the second run they should be dislocated by the value of the
indexing angle! If the grooves are not placed onto each other, half the key
need not be fastened.

--> insert full key and balance rotors. Key compensation is not used, but
the compensation of the indexing balancing.

1
Definition: A shaft is sufficiently exempt from run-out, if e. g. the displacement of center of gravity caused
by the run-out and/or the inclination of the rotor generate static unbalances and/or unbalance
torques, which cause a fraction of the admissible unbalances of the rotor (e.g. max. 20 %).

Shaft has no groove, rotor has 1 groove

Shaft is sufficiently exempt from run-out :
--> balance shaft only.
--> perform key compensation for shaft only with half the key for the rotor
groove. For this purpose perform 2 runs, firstly with half the key
(fastened by adhesive tape or the like), then without it.
--> balance rotors without key.

Caution: angle reference should always be referred to rotor groove!

Shaft has more run-out:

--> Perform "indexing balancing", 1st run: groove not filled,
2nd run subsequent to indexing: insert key of a double length ! (or
add the doubled mass in another way).
--> Balancing without key -

Caution! Angle reference to rotor and shaft must remain the same for all
rotors! (mark the shaft).

Key compensation is not used, but the compensation of the indexing

balancing.

Shaft has 2 grooves, rotor has 1 groove

Shaft is sufficiently exempt from run-out:
--> Balance shaft alone with half the key in a single groove.
--> Insert 1 complete key in the same groove and balance rotors.
Key compensation is not used.
Shaft has more run-out:
--> Perform "indexing balancing".
--> 1st run: without key
--> 2nd run: complete key in one groove
--> Balancing with complete key in the groove of the 2nd run.
Key compensation is not used, but the compensation of the indexing
balancing.
Mark unused groove so as to avoid confusion!
Pay attention to angle reference!

Shaft has 2 grooves, rotor has 2 grooves

(both below 180)
One can proceed from the assumption that both grooves in the rotor are
filled even during operation.
When balancing it is recommendable to use both grooves with a complete
key. It is then possible to balance with or without indexing irrespective of the
rule for the key.
This is the ideal case as far as design and balancing technique are
concerned!

Shaft optional, rotor has no groove (is incorporated later on).

Shaft is sufficiently exempt from run-out:
--> Balance rotor
--> Mount and balance rotor.
Shaft has more run-out:
--> Perform indexing balancing.
In both cases key compensation is not used.

3.4 Activation of the recalculation KEY COMPENSATION at the

measuring device

recalculation is desired. Following the answer YES the recalcuations
available appear first.

4. High speed balancing (option)

Balancing flexible rotors it is useful to watch the unbalance indication during
acceleration

4.1 Starting
in option:
High-speed balancing: .

Note: Additionally features will now be set automatically.

Optional features like single compensation, key compensation, index
balancing and balancing in overlapping cycles will now be locked, even
so they are selected in the rotor data file.

4.2 abc - mode

Measuring with the abc - mode is useful as far as the Wn2 - value of the
machine is not exceeded.
(W = rotor mass with parasitic masses, n = max. speed)
Above this value, (but obviously below the first critical speed) the rotor specific
calibration can be helpful.

Procedure
The procedure is directed by the dialog of the measuring unit and can be done
easily.

Starting
After inputting rotor data or calling a file:

, ; selection 2: rotor specific; selection 1: measurement

Execution
Calibration for the selected speed is done by attaching calibration weights to
the correcting planes.
– Operate demand speed, lock measured values

Indication
Accelerating from standstill up to the demand speed, measurements are
calculated with the permanent calibration with respect to the bearing planes.
Then the rotorspecific calibration is activated.
RC in the bottom screen line indicates the rotor specific mode.

Conversion to other planes

Rotorspecific calibration remains correct, if the new and previous planes are on
one and the same rigid component of the rotor. If not, recalibrate for the new
planes.

Delete
Individual inputs and rotor specific calibration can be deleted in branch
“Store/delete” of the rotor file.

Set of 3 weights
Rotorspecific calibration can also calculate the mass for the center weight of a
set of 3 weights precicely. This procedure is used to compensate the first
modal unbalance.

two weights are to calculate corresponding to the set of 3 weights.

4.3 Measuring the vibration velocity

Flexible rotors operating above the first critical speed and for other
specific tasks measuring the vibration velocity is recommended.

4.4 Compensation mode

In case of high-speed balancing, two special types of compensation may be
used: single compensation and runout compensation.

Single compensation, full- or half-key compensation, and index balancing for

low-speed balancing cannot be combined with high-speed balancing.

4.5 Vibration Velocity and 2f-Measuring Mode (Option)

For flexible rotors operating above the first critical speed and for other specific
tasks measuring the vibration velocity is recommended.
Measurements at a frequency as twice as the speed results often in specific
knowledge of the first critical speed without operating this speed.

– Dimensions for abc will not considered in high speed mode.
– In the screen indication of results the words Plane 1 and Plane 2 will be
replaced by Channel 1 resp. Channel 2

4.5.3 Measuring vibration velocity

5. Rotor-specific calibration (option)

The permanent calibration of a hard-bearing balancing machine with
measuring unit CAB 690 H enables precise unbalance measurement in the first
run within the Gn2 value.

Prerequisites:
– the rotor is rigid
– the mounting adaptor/bearing transmits centrifugal forces to the bearing
supports with sufficient rigidity.
– depending on the position of the correcting planes - e.g. floating or
neighbouring - sufficient distance from the Gn2 value is kept.

If these conditions are not fulfilled due to, for instance,

– modification of body elasticity
– displacement of motor winding depending on the speed
– testing of the rotor at operating speed,
rotor-specific calibration might be sensible.

5.1 Sequence
The sequence is dialog-controlled in the CAB 690 H and thus is easy to
perform.

5.1.1 Start
After inputting rotor data or calling of a file:

5.1.4 Conversion to other planes

The rotor-specific calibration remains correct, if the new and previous planes
are on one and the same rigid component of the rotor. In the negative,
recalibrate for the new planes.

6. Markings of measured values (MM) / Average over

runs. (Option).
Markings of measured values are markings in the vector diagram, representing
preceding measured values. With the help of the markings and some additional
functions (as you can see below) the following appliances are possible:
– See clearly direction and magnitude of a balancing step, if the first
measured value is marked and a second measuring run has been
performed after the balancing procedure,
– Measuring values (due to resonances at different rotor speeds), can be
represented as graphs, the speed range is varying, the corresponding
measuring values are marked and these markings are connected with
the "line function". By this, the additional function "Display unbalance
during run up", which cancel the speed window and restrict the
sensitivity automatism is obligatory.
– Make visible with "Average over runs" the range of dispersion of the
points of measurement (e. g., if bladed rotors are used), even in
combination with reversal balancing or another kind of compensation.

6.1 Sequence
6.1.1 Retention of a measured value (generation of a marking):
press .
The markings of measured values are represented on the screen by their
consecutive numbers (1 through 999), whereby the proper point of
measurement is always amid the number. Optional points may be deleted
again, but the following still have the same number; max. 200 points can be
represented per plane.
When having reached the 1000 or typing the 200st MM, a report is indicated
which must be confirmed with .

6.1.2 When can the measured values be marked ?

Each measured value - retained or not - can be marked, unless in case of
values of subsequent processing. This is true regardless of whether the MMs
are visible (in the vector indication) or not (with digital display).
Furthermore, with the vector indication the number of "runs" and the number of
"values" (MMs) are output. (Runs are always counted in cases where the
preceding speed - after setting of the last marking - has been zero).

6.1.3 Deleting MMs.

Deleting is only possible with vector indication: press keys SF and , then
the question appears "Deleting: (MM-No.) through: (MM-No:) ". Single values,
ranges or all the MMs can be deleted in a single step.
Abort deleting (without deleting): .
The MMs are always deleted automatically in cases where they are no longer
relevant when advancing to another dialogue mode: e. g., cancel or select
COMP
"other rotor" with or , or subsequent to both indexing and calculation

::ODMA\PCDOCS\CSDDOCSO\2936\1 BE-2933-ENG-V1 – 23
© SCHENCK RoTec GmbH, Darmstadt
Technical Documentation

of the compensation values.

Even the line function is out of function.

6.1.4 Average over MMs.

Call by means of SF , only possible with retention. All the values stored as
MM are included: the average is always noted down as such by text "Average,
runs: ..., values: ..."; in the vector indication the average is represented as a
small circle filled in. Release of retention cancels the average.
Remark: If there are new MMs, then a new average has to be formed
afterwards (press SF , ) ; if "old" ones are deleted, the new
average is automatically formed.

6.1.5 Subsequent processing and MMs.

Should results of subsequent processing be on the screen, then no MM can be
set and no average can be formed; however, if desired, this can be done by
changing over to vector or small representation (key ), setting MM there,
SF
computing new average ( , ) and switching back to large representation
CALC
(and - with manual subsequent processing - press ).

6.1.6 Storage of the MMs.

In case the machine should be turned off, with power failure or after having
or SF ,
RESET
actuated the MMs remain in the current memory and can be
used after having turned on again.

6.1.7 Summary of the functions of the marking of measured values.

Retention of a measured value = Setting of a marking for measured
values (MM). As a maximum 200 MMs per plane may be set.
SF
, Deleting MMs.
An erase menu appears, where the number or the range of the MMs
to be deleted is to be input.
SF
, Computing the average over the MMs set, only possible with
retention being turned on.
Release of retention cancels the average.
SF L
, Line function.
The MMs are connected by an even line according to their numerical
order (if, for instance, an acceleration graph is to be represented).
The function acts on all MMs being and on all MMs following. The
same command cancel this function.

7. Two-Machine-Operation (optional)
The measuring instrument CAB 690 can be operated with two different
balancing machines at the same time. There are only changes in software and
hardware necessary.

7.1 Connection
Both machines are permanent connected to the CAB 690.

7.2 Operation
The two machine-operation differs only slightly from the operation with a single
machine.
By calling a stored rotor file, the calibration data of the corresponding machine
are automatically activated and "M1" or "M2" are displayed in the comment line,
that is to say, the rotor is or must be accomodated on this machine.

If the rotor is accomodated on the wrong machine, no indication of the

"actual speed" will be displayed upon activation of the operating mechanism
(which probably sets off the search for a non-existing error!).

By generating a new file, it will be determined at first on which of the two

machines the rotor is to be measured. Further rotors of this kind must then be
balanced on this machine, therefore it is strongly recommended that the file
denomination be selected, so as to favour an easy recognition of the machine
to which the rotor file belongs!

7.3 Calibration and test functions

Every machine has its own calibration data.
The first question when starting the calibration dialog is, whether machine 1 or
machine 2 has to be calibrated.
Similarly, the machine-specific test functions are executed separately for each
machine.

8. Overlapping cycle (optional)

Overlapping cycle (OC) is a mode of operation, in which the measured values
of the rotor currently corrected are indicated, in which the unbalance of the
following rotor is measured; i.e. indication of the results of the measurement of
that rotor, which has just been measured, and usually not of the rotor currently
measured on the balancing machine. The indication, relating to the rotor
previously measured, is displayed in the moment when the operating system is
started up from the standstill and the speed window is achieved; the retention
symbol disappears and the new indication is displayed. Afterwards the new
displaying of the retention symbol signals that the measured values of the
rotating rotor have already been defined (although they have not yet been
displayed).

8.1 Selection of the overlapping cycle

The overlapping cycle is activated in the rotor data; the automatic retention is
automatically activated, since it is impossible to assess from what moment the
measured values have been available and when the cycle can be retained.
If the overlapping cycle is selected, this will be displayed in the status line by
means of the abbreviation "OC" (Overlapping Cycle) .

Only rotors of the same kind (i.e. belonging to the same file) can be
processed in the overlapping cycle.

8.2 Starting of the overlapping cycle

During the first test run there are no results relating to previous rotors.
Therefore, during the first test run, the monitor displays the following message:
"Overlapping cycle, first run".

This message does not appear during the determination of compensation

values for index balancing, full key compensation and simple compensation,
yet it does appear only once the compensation values have been stored and
operation is started for the first test run with the existing compensation
values.

8.3 Modification of rotor data

After the rotor data have been modified, the measurement result of the last
rotor, displayed on the monitor, is immediately adapted to the new data and the
indication "run" is reset to 0; moreover, the file name disappears from the
monitor, because the current file is no longer identical to the original file. If the
modified file is to be stored permanently, must be pressed (for further
information, see there).

26 –BE-2933-ENG-V1 ::ODMA\PCDOCS\CSDDOCSO\2936\1
© SCHENCK RoTec GmbH, Darmstadt
Operating, Measuring Unit

8.4 Conclusion of the overlapping cycle

In order to display the measurement values of the last rotor to be balanced, any
or the same rotor must be started up from the standstill after retention and
disactivation of the operating mechanism.

8.5 Printout of the measured values

Press the key : in all cases those values are printed out, which are
currently displayed!

8.6 Special characteristics

The key "another rotor, same type" ( ) has no function, since the
overlapping cycle is anyhow executed in the same mode.
CALC
The key is without function, yet other subsequent calculations are still
possible in "automatic mode".
If measured values are to be marked for the purpose of averaging, for instance
for the determination of compensation values, this operation must take place
before the activation of the overlapping cycle; the overlapping cycle can be
then activated in the rotor file. (See corresponding file name and storage in
"Modification of the rotor").

9. CAB 690 - Calibration for 1-plane balancing

Calibration of the measuring unit CAB 690 for 1-plane balancing is used on
balancing machines with a mechanical fixture, e. g. tiebar frame or in vertical 1-
plane balancing machines.

A special mode of calibration is used:

The calibration dialog is called by and processed up to the point

“selection of display modes”.

At this point case 3 (stat) is entered i. e. later on only the unbalance resultant 2
is indicated in the left hand display in the screen.

To achieve a correct measuring result for the unbalance resultant calibration is

done by a static unbalance and a couple unbalance.

Select "Rotorspecific Calibration".

1st Calibration run is carried out without weights

2nd Calibration run is carried out with one test weight for the resultant.
– Enter mass and angle of test weight.
– Enter radius r3
– Attach calibration weight in the balancing planes
– Carry out measuring run.
– Remove calibration weight.

3rd Calibration run is carried out without weights, like the first run.
– Enter mass for smallest possible couple
O O O
i. e.
r1, r2 = r3
– Carry out measuring run.

In this way the "Permanent Calibration" will not be changed.

The "Rotorspecific Calibration" has to be stored in the rotor data file.

After the final termination of the calibration runs by means of the “quasi-
static” unbalance is indicated in the left-hand display field.

The right-hand display field remains dark.

The appearing warning concerning the distance between angles could be

ignored, because this warning concerns only the not displayed couple
unbalance. The recommendation to use heavier test weigths have to be
ignored too.

2
Instead of unbalance resultant the expression “static unbalance” is frequently used.

10. Compensation of unbalance by drilling

(Measuring unit CAB 690 with recalculation DRILLING)

10.1 Description
When compensating unbalance by drilling you may perform radial or axial
drilling, drilling in components and/or polar drilling.
The measuring unit CAB 690 furnishes exact measuring results in all these
cases - even in case of combinations -, and this in consideration of
a) the drill point, even when you drill in the curved rotor surface,
b) the depth of the drill hole, since the radius of the center of gravity for
radial drilling and the influence of the plane for axial drilling vary.
c) Moreover the maximum admissible drill depth is checked, and if
d) several holes must be drilled next to one another, the web, i. e. the
thickness between two adjacent drill holes, is also checked, which is
important above all for radial drilling, as the drill holes approach one
another as depth increases.
e) Finally the measuring unit computes - in case of several holes - the
optimum hole depth.
f) If desired, all data may be stored to the rotor data file.

10.2 Operation

10.2.1 Activation of the recalculation DRILLING at the CAB 690

1. In the rotor data dialog the question is automatically asked, whether a
recalculation is desired. When the answer is YES the recalculations
available appear one after another.
2. Activation of recalculation DRILLING for a rotor, the file of which already
exists:
SF CALC
Press key and then key . Continue as described in 1.

10.2.2 Plane setting a - b - c and other inputs

When setting planes you have to remember that in case of axial drilling the
front surfaces you drill in are the compensation planes and the distances have
to entered accordingly. Analogous to that, for radial drilling, the radius of the
cylinder-shaped rotor you drill in is entered as a compensation radius.
Apart from the necessary input of the drilling diameter and density of the rotor
material a maximum admissible drill depth can also be entered.

10.2.3 Distribution function

1. In case of a small unbalance a drill hole is sufficient for polar
compensation, two drill holes for compensation are required in case of
drilling in components.

2. In case of a high unbalance compensation is automatically distributed to

several drill holes.
For components the maximum drill depth is used in the
corresponding number of components.
Moreover the program remembers, which holes have been drilled
so that during further measuring runs these positions drop out.

::ODMA\PCDOCS\CSDDOCSO\2936\1 BE-2933-ENG-V1 – 29
© SCHENCK RoTec GmbH, Darmstadt
Technical Documentation

For polar drilling distribution to several drill holes takes place as

follows:
– The drill depth of all drill holes is the same,
– the angular distance between the drill holes is chosen so that the
minimum web is just adhered to,
– for the drill depth an optimum is computed.

10.2.4 Unbalance which can be compensated

If unbalance is so high that it cannot even be compensated with the
maximum drill depth and maximum number of drill holes, then all the drill
holes (thus the maximum number) and the maximum (or optimum) drill
depth blink in the indication of the results.
Additionally the residual unbalance attainable by this compensation is
indicated either as a Tol-factor or in gcm if a tolerance value has not been
entered.

11. WEDI - Weight Distribution

11.1 Description
The WEDI program is used to correct a measured unbalance by applying
graded weights at predetermined correction positions.

11.2 Procedure
11.2.1 Introduction
The post-calculation program WEDI is activated after the prompt "Perform
calculation" has been answered by the user by entering "Y" and the mode of
operation has been chosen.
There are two modes of operation
– Automatic: WEDI results are displayed directly after readout retention.
– Manual: After readout retention the normal result display appears.
Changeover to WEDI results is achieved by actuating the
CALC
button .
The following inputs are made separately for each plane.

11.2.2 Correction positions

Number of components :
The user can enter 3 to 99 (incl.) positions for unbalance correction.

Even /Uneven (1/0) :

Even (1) means that the angular offset of correction locations relative to each
other is uniform. In this case, you first need to enter the starting angle, i.e. the
angular position of the 1st correction position. The program solicits input of
1st component angle.
Uneven (2) means that the angular offset of the correction locations relative to
each other is not necessarily the same all round. The prompt relating to the 1st
component angle is omitted and the display directly solicits to the input of the
unevenly distributed correction positions. For each component, the user has to
enter the number of the correction point and its angular position.

Even if some locations are occupied in a uniform distribution of correction

locations it could be easier to choose (1) and to determine this locations as
occupied than to enter many locations individually as described in 11.2.3

11.2.3 Preset parameters and correction weights

Automatic consolidation of weights when in tolerance? (Y/N)

If you select "Y" at this point, the unit will automatically consolidate all set
weights after both planes are within tolerance, attempting to calculate a better
solution.

Enter occupied correction positions ? (Y/N)

Any correction points entered here will be excluded in the distribution of
weights. This may be the case, e.g., if specific positions are not available for
correction for design reasons, or if certain positions are already occupied by
correction weights resulting from preliminary balancing runs. Input of an
occupied position is made by entering the respective number of the correction
point. Up to 50 locations can be thus pre-occupied. Duplication is not permitted.

Maximum number of weights :

Enter the max. permitted number of weights per plane. When this number is
exceeded the system attempts to combine all weights applied in previous
balancing runs.

Maximum angle for first balancing step :

This is the angular range within which the first correction is to be made (max.
360 °) The first correction is calculated in such a way that all weights are
situated within this range. The unit's default value is 120 °.

Operating, Measuring Unit

Enter balancing weights:

Enter the weights available for unbalance correction. Up to 10 different weights
per plane are permitted, graded from 0.001 to 999.9. Weights which are
entered twice are automatically eliminated. Permitted engineering units are mg,
g, kg, moz, oz, koz. The engineering unit has to be entered immediately after
the first number. Unless the preset units are to be retained, the advance key
has to be pushed first.

This completes the input of presetting data for the measuring run. Unbalance
measurement can now start.

Perform measuring run !

11.3 Results

If measurements are within tolerance in a measurement plane, this is signalled

by the words "in tol" in a green bar. The result display shows the calculated
correction weights for each plane, along with their angular positions.
On each side of the display, four weights and the associated locations can be
displayed for each plane. The complete result can comprise up to four display
pages. Advance from one page to the next by pushing .

If there are more than two correction planes, you can move up and down by
SF SF
pushing , and , .

The last page of the display contains the tolerance information in the following
form:

x(Y) * tol

X= multiple of the tolerance expected after unbalance correction

y= originally present multiple of the tolerance

Advancing ( ) to the next display from the result display will bring
you to the

"Summary of used positions"

The list contains pre-occupied positions and positions occupied by correction

weights (without weight information).
If all planes are within tolerance and "consolidation of weights" has been
selected, the system will now suggest

Consolidation possible - Remove weights

By advancing to the next step of the display, new, consolidated weights are
shown.

Prior to the next balancing run, the user has to inform the system, whether any
weights were consolidated during the last balancing run.

Consolidation of weights during last run ? (Y/N)

11.4 Possible error messages

Any error messages that may occur are output directly in context, and in clear
text, and are therefore immediately understandable.

12.5 General technical data

Minimum achievable residual unbalance:
See the specification of the machine, but not better than the unbalance of the
standard readout.

Average measuring time

2 - 10 seconds (without starting and braking time).

Rotor data file (variable)

– designation of data file by a maximum of 16 alphanumeric characters,
– complete data of the rotor geometry
– form of unbalance representation
– method of correction
– balancing speed setpoint
– mean value calculation selection
Up to 100 rotor data files can be stored. In the case of irregularly distributed
components (option) for correction the number of records may be decreased
slightly.

Setting
The measuring unit is set while the rotor is at standstill.

Data memory:
The data required for up to 100 rotors is stored internally in a batterybuffered
memory with a service life of approx. 10 years and is thus protected against
mains failure and can be recalled at any time.

Special features:
a) To obtain a short build-up time, the storage constants are automatically
changed with the speed ranges.
b) Output of the measured data, setup data and rotor specific texts on a
printer.
c) All displays on the screen including the vector indication can be printed by
means of the line printer through the function keyboard.
d) A message function permits information, such as fault signals, job
instructions etc. to be stored in the measuring unit and to be displayed
through the function key.
e) The software includes extensive self-test functions which allow to identify a
p.c. board being out of the specified accuracy.

Optional equipment
Printer, (surcharge),
indexing aid for "non-coupling" drives, (surcharge),
software extensions to the program, (surcharge).

Design:
To permit easy maintenance, the electronic equipment of the unit is subdivided
into function groups which are designed as plug-in boards. Maintenance of the
unit is primarily from the operating side. Light-emitting diodes on the individual
p.c. boards indicate the status of the circuitry.

A state-of-the-art 16 bit microprocessor working with a high-performance

multitasking operating system is used as the CPU.

The power supply units are electronically stabilized; thus mains voltage
variations of ± 10 % have no influence on the unbalance readout. The low
power consumption of the units avoids unnecessary heating. This has a
positive effect on the service life of the components.

Power supply: 110 / 220 V ± 10 %, 50 / 60 Hz.
