Activity Guide

INTRODUCTION
This activity is about Good Trouble, a
teaching of Civil Rights activist and
U.S. Congressman John Lewis.
Lewis spent his life standing up and
speaking out when he saw injustice.
He inspired followers to become
catalysts for good trouble as a way to
build a better world.
You will learn about different social
justice movements from around the
globe and through time. Along the
way, you will learn about important
leaders of these movements and the
role they played in changing history.
In the end, we hope you will better
understand the historical importance
of these movements in shaping
freedom. We also hope you will be
inspired to think about ways we can
each make meaningful choices every
day as we strive to build a better
world.
This activity guide is based on a
lesson
plan created by professional
educators for Minecraft: Education
Edition. To learn more about teaching

Activity Guide
Enter the Good Trouble world and
meet Congressman John Lewis who
will escort you through the Good
Trouble World and introduce you to
other leaders who have been
catalysts for good trouble around the
world. Green beacons will help guide
you along the way.
Yellow beacons show activities that
provide an opportunity to reflect on
the impact of each movement as you
create, build, and play in the game.
These activities include creating
street art at a Black Lives Matter
protest,
rebuilding a school in Pakistan,
building a monument to an
anti-Apartheid leader, reflecting on
exclusion while learning about the
segregation and the US Civil Rights
Movement, building a symbol to the
teachings of Gandhi, and drumming
up votes from women
in Victorian London.

To accompany your learning, we are

providing links to resources that will

Throughout your journey, we
encourage you to think about these
questions and use the book and quill
in Minecraft to record your answers:

1. What are the names of the social

justice movements and who were
some of their leaders?
2. Why did each movement begin
and what has it achieved?

3. How did the leaders of these

movements cause Good Trouble?

4. Can you think of a time that you

caused good trouble by standing up
for someone else?
5. After learning about John Lewis
and the different social justice
movements, can you think of a way to
become a catalyst for good trouble in
your community?

We encourage everyone to exercise

curiosity to better understand these
topics, but also to
demonstrate courage in discussing
them with others and speaking out
against injustice when you see it in
your community. To practice
awareness, think about your
reactions to each of the settings and
how your experience might lead you
to think in a certain
way. To exercise curiosity, ask
questions and do research to learn
more. To be courageous, stand up
and speak out when you see
intolerance, unfairness, or injustice.
