Title: Archimedes Principle

Objective: To use Archimedes Principle to determine the density of objects which are denser than water.

Introduction: In order to determine the density of objects which are denser than water, using Archimedes
Principle, we collect various objects (spheres, pendulum bob, marble etc.,) all which are denser than water,
and we than determine their mass and volume, and calculate their density using this formula: ρ = m/v, and
compare it to the objects' theoretical density values. In this experiment, we will learn how to determine the
density of objects denser than water, using Archimedes Principle.

Apparatus and materials:

Vernier calipers, graduated cylinder, beaker, samples: pendulum bob, marble, magnet, big bolt nut, small
bolt nut.

Procedure:
1.Determine the weight of each sample.
2.Calculate the theoretical volume of the samples by direct measurement with the Vernier calipers.
3.Determine the volume of the sample by displacement of water in a graduated cylinder.
4.Repeat step 1 until 3for the second and third sample.
5.Repeat step 1 until 3and recorded in Part 1 –Calculated volume.
6.Do analysis step 3 until 4 and recorded in Part 2–Archimedes principle measurement.

DISCUSSION
1. Among the 2 methods used in determining the density of the samples. Part 2 is more accurate since
it shows the volume of water displaced by the mass of the object in a graduated cylinder.
2. The object with the highest percentage difference is marble which has a value of 41.25% and the
object with the lowest percentage difference is the big nut which has a value of 0.77%.
