Business Review: Conduct an Environmental Scan:

An Environmental Scan is the identification and monitoring of factors from both inside and outside the
organization that may impact the long-term viability of the organization. During this step you are essentially
attempting to develop the “big picture”.
Cluster information into facts and trends.
Sort information you have gathered into facts and trends for each area of the marketing environment scan.
Capture the information in the tables (below) in a way that can be easily understood.
Note: Some information may fall into more than one area. All points contained within the tables (below)
should be data-linked facts with provable statistics, not opinion, and referenced APA style.

Step 1: Collect the facts and identify trends for each of the (macro) EXTERNAL factors.
Gather data and information.
The starting point for this portion of the analysis is to gather accurate and relevant information on the external
factors and trends of the marketing environmental scan.
Delve deeper into the competition and conduct a rigorous review of the marketplace and competitors to
determine competitive practices and new approaches in each area of the marketing mix (product, price, place,
and promotion).
Understand consumer triggers and their connectivity to a brand by evaluating consumer behaviour. Read
product reviews and industry research reports.
