Dengue Control and Prevention in Barangay Calumpang, Mabalacat City, Pampanga Situation Description
Situation Description
Dengue is the most common and most reported vector-borne disease in the Philippines. This
disease is higher in tropical and subtropical countries such as the Philippines, especially during
the wet or rainy season wherein rainwater collected forms breeding sites for these vectors in the
canals and stagnant water buildup. This disease is present all year long and can affect any age
group. Though this disease is common, it has a high fatality rate especially to children aged 5-9
years old having no specific treatment and early symptoms being ignored.
On July 15, 2019, several regions recorded a fast increase in the number of Dengue cases in the
Philippines that brought about the declaration of a National Dengue Alert according to Health
Secretary Francisco T. Duque III. One of the provinces that was highly affected by dengue virus
is Pampanga, particularly, the city of Mabalacat with 230 cases or 16% of the total cases in the
province last August 2019.
Many Dengue virus (DENV) infections only produce mild illness with acute flu-like symptoms,
which can potentially progress into a fatal condition called severe dengue if not detected early
and if not given proper medical attention. The burden brought about by Dengue to the family
may be alarming due to the high cost of treatment and admission and unproductivity caused by
illness and premature death.
Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 number 3 states; “Good Health and Well-Being” of the
people. It aims to end the epidemics of neglected tropical diseases such as dengue. Sustainable
Development Goals number 6 aims of having a Clean Water and Sanitation as it improves the
water quality that will reduce pollution, eliminate dumping, remove breeding sites and halve the
proportion of untreated wastewater.
