occur in a cell and in the organism.2 These complex interrelated processes are the basis of
the life on a molecular scale and allow the various activities of cells: grow, reproduce,
maintain their structures and respond to stimuli, among others.

Metabolism is divided into two conjugated processes, catabolism and anabolism, which
are coupled processes, since one depends on the other:

Catabolic reactions release energy; An example of this is glycolysis, a process of


degradation of compounds such as glucose, the reaction of which results in the release of
energy retained in their chemical bonds.
Anabolic reactions, on the other hand, use that energy to rebuild chemical bonds and
build components of cells, such as proteins and nucleic acids.
