Course and Student Profile

You will state the name of the course you are developing materials for and also provide a detailed
description about the course.

1. My course is General Biology. It is an introductory course, worth 2 credit hours. We usually have
30 students enrolled. Our textbook is Biology by Sylvia Mader, 12th ed, 2015. We use an
institutional learning management system.

2. Class meets for 2 hours a week, one hour Tuesday and one hour Thursday.

3. What type of technology is available to you and your students (e.g., computer, internet access)?
We have a computer in the front of the classroom and a projector. We have a microphone. We
have internet at the university, but many times it does not work. Students use their phones or
laptops and use their own internet. If the internet is working, I use online polls and quizlet n my
class.

4. Students have English that is around B2. They don’t know very much about biology, since this is
an introduction course. They are usually motivated to study in English, but they get tired in
classes speaking English. They are all from Vietnam.

5. I plan on teaching the whole course in English and want to start in one year.

6. My students could speak English to tourists or to other students. They could also take classes in
English at our university or at a language center or they could watch English TV programs or
movies or play online games in English. Most students don’t really try to speak English outside of
class.

7. No, we don’t have any additional tutoring or support. I wish we did!

8. The textbook offers online tools and resources, which I can assign. The English level is probably
higher than my students, so I will need to help them with the content with vocabulary and
understanding. There are many pictures in the book.
