Patterns in the Sky

Standards/ Standard:

Objectives
-1. Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns
that can be predicted

a. • Patterns of the motion of the sun, moon, and stars in the

sky can be observed, described, and predicted.

Objectives:

-students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of planetary

movement.

-Students will be able to describe the movement of stars, the sun, and
the moon.
What is a Pattern?
A pattern is something that repeats over and over
again like the sun setting, and the moon rising.
Does our sun
follow a
pattern?

● Yes! Our sun rises in the

East and Sets in the West.
● It starts on one side, and
moves over us during the
day.
● Our shadows move,
because the sun moves.
Does our moon follow a
pattern?
Yes! Our moon moves around us too, and that is
why it looks different sometimes.

Have you seen a full moon?

Have you seen the moon when it is just a sliver?

Do the stars
follow a pattern?
Yes! Just like the sun and
moon, stars move in the sky
too.
Our sun, moon, and
stars all have
patterns!
-The sun rises in the East and sets in the
West, that is a pattern!

-The moon changes shape depending on

where it is in our sky, that is a pattern too!

-The stars move across the night sky, you

guessed it, that is a pattern!
Learning Check

Does the sun rise and set in the same place?

Does the moon always stay in one place?

Do the stars move in the night sky?
