simulation of a gasifier using Colombian coal.

What was done in this research was something fascinating since the simuñacion of
a carbon gasifier capable of capturing carbon dioxide in order to obtain hydrogen
was designed, this can be done with the Aspen HYSYS software, is a chemical
process simulator used to mathematically model chemical processes, from unit
operations to complete chemical plants and refineries.

Coal, anthracite and bituminous was used as raw material, these from different
regions of Colombia, the characteristics of the coal and the conditions of the feed
flows to the reactor are dependent on the final conditions of the product gas in the
simulation, a sensitivity analysis has to be carried out in the simulator once this
analysis is carried out, the behavior of the variables is observed.

the feeding conditions had to be taken into account, thanks to this, intervals can be
set to take into account in real cases in the energy industry, being a fundamental
factor that Colombia currently has one of the largest carbon reserves in Latin
America.

It must be taken into account that clean energies have become important areas of
research to have a good sustainable development, with hydrogen being important
in research, since hydrogen is an important energy carrier that can be considered
as a fuel alternative.

speaking of coal, this is currently used to satisfy around 40% of the world's total
electricity demand, The production of hydrogen from renewable energies is part of
the objectives of the countries of the world for the decarbonization of the planet, for
this it is possible to take advantage of the large carbon reserves in Colombia to
produce blue hydrogen.

For this reason, the objective of simulating and designing a carbon gasifier, the
simulation process would be carried out assuming a gasifier in steady state,
considering a condition of chemical equilibrium.
These studies have been carried out before in Australia, India, Peru, Colombia,
where the probability of taking advantage of coal for the production of hydrogen is
seriously considered.

Previously it was said that Colombia is one of the largest reserves in Latin
America, delving deeper into the subject, thermal and metallurgical coal is
produced in the areas where this type of coal occurs most is in La Guajira and on
the Atlantic coast, for another part of the highland zone cundiboyacence is
metallurgical.

now to carry out the simulation it has to be carried out under certain operating
conditions, these conditions are shown below in the following table:

and to analyze the next and last analyzes it was done according to the protocols
established by the regulations
ASTM 3175, ASTM D 3172, ASTM D 73174, ASTM D
3302, ASTM D 5865 and ASTM D 5865.

In the simulator, carbon is taken as a solid and the chosen fluid package is Peng-
Robinson, the equation used for this simulation with which the properties of pure
components, binary ternate and multicomponent mixtures can be calculated.

On the other hand, during the simulation process, the simulator calculated the
gasification temperature and the decomposition temperature of the coal, the coal
feed rate and the oxidant / coal ratio were kept constant.
Everything that has been seen is very interesting since carbon gasification
technology is an alternative for energy applications, since hydrogen and electricity
can be easily co-produced in a gasification plant.

concluding that Colombia being one of the largest coal reserves in Latin America,
studies of carbon gasification can be made much easier, this being an alternative
in the country to produce energy.
