Field Inspection of Bogie Cartridge Pins on Suspended Undercarriage

Summary

This bulletin shows the procedure needed to perform a field inspection of the bogie cartridge pins on Tractors
equipped with suspended undercarriage. Inspection can identify parts that are worn or damaged so parts can be
replaced before damage occurs to the track roller frame and bogie bores. Early attention to minor problems can
prevent damage and help to keep downtime and repair costs to a minimum.

Intervals for inspection of bogie cartridge pins will vary according to the severity of the machine application.
Guidelines for setting inspection schedules are given at the end of this bulletin.

Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic
safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations
before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the
necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

This bulletin may contain hazardous steps. A safety alert symbol like the one below is used to call attention to a
hazard.

Warning messages identify a specific, imminent, latent, hazard that has a reasonable probability of resulting in
personal injury or death if the warning is ignored.

The machine must be on a level, hard surface before a separation of the

track is made. Any time a separation of both tracks is made, the
machine must have blocks correctly positioned so the machine will not
move.

Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read

and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper
disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death.

Canceled Part Numbers and Replaced Part Numbers

This document does not include all canceled part number and replaced part number information. Use NPR on
SIS for information about canceled part numbers and replaced part numbers. NPR will provide the current part
numbers for replaced parts.

Inspection Procedure

Look for oil dripping between the bogie and the track roller frame. Pins that leak should be scheduled for repair
to prevent damage to the bogie and track roller frame bores.

If no leaks are found, inspect the pins according to the schedule recommended in the section titled “Inspection
Intervals”.

plate covers the bogie cartridge pin bore and the end of the cartridge pin. See Illustration 2

To check the oil level in bogie cartridge pins, remove the cover for access to the plastic plug in the stopper in the

Drive the plastic plug into the pin hole to check the oil level.

Drive the plastic plug in the center of the rubber stopper in to the pin with a hammer and punch. If oil flows out
of the plug hole, the oil reservoir is full. Immediately install a new plug. If the oil is cold, oil may not flow out of
the hole even when the oil reservoir is full. See Illustration 4

Illustration 5 g02195254
Insert a clean straight wire into the pin reservoir.

If no oil flows out of the plug hole, use a clean straight wire to measure the amount of oil in the pin reservoir.
Insert the wire straight into the hole, so that the wire stays parallel to the axis (along the centerline) of the pin as
in Illustration 5

Use a 170-5664 Test and Fill Cart Gp or the FT-2724 Nitrogen Pressure Test Unit to perform a pressure test on the bogie cartridge.

If there is no oil on the wire when removed from the pin reservoir use a 170-5664 Test and Fill Cart Gp or the
FT-2724 Nitrogen Pressure Test Unit to perform a pressure test on the bogie cartridge. Fill to the point where the
pressure gauge reads not more than 138 kPa (20 psi). Observe pressure for 10 seconds. If there is a pressure drop
of 2.5 percent or less than 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi), the cartridge seals are acceptable. Fill with Cat FDAO Syn. Put a
6Y-0473 Clear Plug in the rubber stopper. See Illustration 6

If oil leaks out between the bogie and track roller frame during the pressure test a seal is leaking.

If a seal is leaking in the bogie cartridge pin, the pressure will drop off. Oil will run out between the bogie and
the track roller frame as shown in Illustration 7. Pins that have leaking seals must be replaced as soon as possible
to prevent major damage to the bogie and track roller frame bores.

If a pin must be replaced, while the pin is out of the track roller frame, check the pin bore sizes. A minimum of
0.05 mm (0.002 inch) press fit between the pin and bore must exist. SeeIllustration8 If the maximum pin bore
measurement is greater than the pin diameter minus (-) 0.05 mm (0.002 inch), yet some press fit exist,
immediate repair is not necessary. Install a new bogie cartridge pin and recondition the bogie pin bores at the
next scheduled track roller frame reconditioning.

If there is no press fit, the pin bore must be reconditioned. For the correct reconditioning procedures refer to

ends of the pin. If the Bogie Cartridge Pin assembly leaks, replace the Cartridge Pin assembly. The Bogie
Cartridge Pin assembly is not serviceable.

Inspection Intervals
The recommended inspection interval for bogie cartridge pins will vary depending on the severity of the
machine application. Inspections should be performed often enough to identify and repair pins before major
damage occurs to the track roller frame and bogie bores. As a general guideline, for machines operating in high
impact conditions, perform an initial inspection at 4000 SMU (service meter units or hours of service operation)
and other inspections each 2000 SMU there after. In low impact conditions, perform inspections at the time of
major undercarriage work or a minimum of 5000 SMU. For machines operating in ideal conditions inspect the
pins at a maximum of 9000 SMU. Inspections will help to spot worn or damaged parts before problems can
develop into major and costly repairs.

A form similar to the one shown, can be used to record bogie cartridge pin inspections.
