Simulation and Results

Operating requirements of the distillation column are:

1 To maintain top and side product compositions within ±5% of their set-points (at steady state) for
economical benefits.
2 To maintain bottom temperature within limits fixed by operational constraints. However, in this design there
is no specific requirement.

In addition to operating requirements given above, proposed controller has to maintain hard bounds of all draw rates
within ±5.

Three output variables that have to be controlled are:

1 Top product composition, Y1
2 Side product composition, Y2
3 Bottom temperature, Y3

Three manipulated variables are:

1 Top draw rate, U1
2 Side draw rate, U2
3 Bottom reflux duty, U3

Conclusion
Linear PI and Fuzzy PI controller are
designed for 3x3 distillation column
Based on simulation results, fuzzy PI
controller has better performance compared
to its counterpart and it fulfill the operating
requirements while maintaining
inputs/outputs constrains
