Larchmont kindergartners get
lessons in everything from
moving their feet to rocket ships

Kindergarteners at Larchmont
Elementary School have been
learning all about the various
forms of transportation that exist
in, and even out, of this world.
The lesson became a lot more
real for students when a helicop-
ter landed at their school, offering
a chance for the kids to watch it
land, see it up close, and ask ques-
tions.
“One of the units of study is
transportation with an emphasis
on how things move,” Larchmont
Elementary School Principal
Sean Sweeney said. “They’re
looking at transportation from a
physical science standpoint, from
identifying various types of
transportation from your own
two feet to rocket ships. They’re
exploring how to get to various
places you want to go in this
world.”

The landing was made possible
by a Larchmont parent, Phil Nor-
ton, who has a son in one of the
kindergarten classes.
Norton had to have the OK for
a landing by the state Department
of Transportation and the Mt.
Laurel Police Department helped
to make sure everybody was safe.
Norton operates a CBS 3 chop-
per for a living. He wasn’t able to
use the CBS 3 chopper to show
Larchmont students because it
was needed for work, but he has
access to other helicopters.
It seemed meant to be, especial-
ly because there is a spot right by
the school, at the corner of Larch-
mont Boulevard and Union Mill
Road that is zoned for medivac
helicopters to land in the case of
emergencies.

Mt. Laurel’s Shabel ready to storm state

Moorestown Friends School
has become the Cinderella story
of the New Jersey Consumer
Bowl competition, and Mt. Laurel
student Wyeth Shabel was a big
part of the reason why.
After discovering the glass slip-
per fit when it competed for the
first time and won the Burlington
County competition on Feb. 16,
last week MFS won the South Re-
gion competition to earn an invi-
tation to the big ball – the state fi-
nals on May 9 in Trenton.
“We never expected to get this
far,’’ said team captain Amanda
Connell of Cherry Hill after the
victory on Burlington County
College’s Mount Laurel campus.
“We entered the Consumer Bowl
this year to test the waters. Win
or lose (in the state finals), we
have had a blast.’’
Last week’s regional competi-
tion featured seven county cham-
pions from South Jersey. Absega-
mi High School, Cumberland Re-
gional, Glassboro and Salem
County Career and Technical
School competed in the first
round.
Salem Career and Tech scored
120 points to earn a berth in the
regional final against the winner
of Moorestown Friends, Winslow
and Ocean City. Moorestown
Friends defeated Winslow by 15
points.
Sophomores Trinh Son of
Camden and Spencer Bard of
Lumberton, and Shabel, a senior,
answered consecutive questions
correctly to give Moorestown
Friends a 15-10 lead after the first
round, and it carried a 40-30 lead
into the final lightning round.
Freshman Kirsten Mullen of
Moorestown, the team’s alter-
nate, was not available to compete
in the final.
Connell and Bard correctly an-
swered six of the first eight ques-
tions (some before the question
was finished being read) to send
MFS on its way to a 120-70 win.
“That was our strategy,’’ said
Shabel, about answering early.
“We learned that in the county
competition from (defending
champ) Seneca. After you hear
most of the question, you can
guess what the rest will be and
give the answer. And once you
hear two correct answers when
it’s multiple choice, you know it
will be ‘all the above.’”

had an outstanding performance,
scoring all but five of her team’s
points. Salem Career and Tech
lost in the regional final last year

The owner of Scotto’s, located
on Route 38, reported a burglary

resident of Arons Circle in Sewell
for driving while intoxicated. The
suspect was stopped on Route 73
on April 16 at 12:57 a.m. and
charged with DWI. She was re-
leased pending a municipal court

and a cash register drawer valued
at $2,500 were taken from inside
the business. The incident oc-
curred sometime between 10 p.m.
on April 11 and 10 a.m. on April
12. There was no sign of forced
entry to the building or office.
The manager of the Larch-
mont Swim Club, located on
Larchmont Boulevard, reported
an incident of criminal mischief
to Mt. Laurel police. The incident
occurred between 6 p.m., April 12,
and 11 a.m., April 13. Someone
had attempted to drill through the
front door locks. The damage is
estimated at $25.
A resident of Ralston Drive re-
ported a theft from a vehicle. The
incident occurred between 5:30
p.m., April 11, and 7:30 a.m., April
12. The vehicle was unlocked, and
$15 was taken.
An employee of the Seeton
Turf Warehouse on Roland Av-
enue reported a theft. Diesel fuel,
valued at approximately $360, was
taken from a vehicle parked in
the parking lot.
The incident occurred between
5 p.m. on April 15 and 5 a.m. on
April 18.
On April 17 at 2:03 a.m., Mt.
Laurel police arrested a resident
of Hainesport Road for driving
while intoxicated. The suspect
was charged with DWI and re-

headaches around Centerton
Road for the next couple of

Second National
Take Back Day April 30
Time to clean out your medi-
cine cabinets, folks.
The Mount Laurel Police De-
partment is a collection site for
the National Take Back initiative.
Residents will be able to drop off
unused and expired medication.
More than 7 million Americans
currently abuse prescription
drugs, according to the 2009 Sub-
stance Abuse and Mental Health
Administration’s National Sur-
vey on Drug Use and Health.
Each day, approximately, 2,500
teens use prescription drugs to
get high for the first time accord-
ing to the Partnership for a Drug
Free America. Studies show that
a majority of abused prescription
drugs are obtained from family
and friends, including the home
medicine cabinet.
In an effort to address this
problem, DEA, in conjunction
with state and local law enforce-
ment agencies throughout the
United States, conducted the first
ever National Prescription Drug
Take Back Day last year. The pur-
pose of this National Take Back
$*#
Day was to provide a venue for
persons who wanted to dispose of
unwanted and unused prescrip-
tion drugs. This effort was a huge
success in removing potentially
dangerous prescription drugs,
particularly controlled sub-
stances, from our nation’s medi-
cine cabinets. There were approx-
imately 3,000 state and local law
enforcement agencies throughout
the nation that participated in the
event. All told, the American Pub-
lic turned in more than 121 tons
of pills on this first National Take
Back Day.
Due to the overwhelming suc-
cess of the first event, DEA has
scheduled the second National
Prescription Drug Take Back Day,
which will take place on Saturday,
April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in
the Mt. Laurel Police Department
lobby.
This is a great opportunity for
those who missed the first event
or who have subsequently accu-
mulated unwanted, unused pre-
scription drugs, to safely dispose
of them.
