This multifaceted study proposes a revised interpretation of the
term ‘the knowledge of good and evil’ (‫ )הדעת טוב ורע‬in Genesis
2–3. It analyzes the many permutations of ‫ טוב‬and ‫ רעע‬throughout
the Hebrew Scriptures, with a majority focus in Genesis and the
Deuteronomistic History and makes a comparison with ancient
Near Eastern historiographical texts. Considering the hermeneu-
tical principle of divine retribution and thus contextualizing his
theocentric analysis of the lexemes, the author contends for an
interpretation of the divine knowledge for administering reward
and punishment.
