President Sukarno declares the Bandung Conference open on 18 April 1955 with African and
Asian countries to unite in the fight against colonialism. It was a first intercontinental
conference of colored people in the history of the world that leader of Asian and African
countries met together to discuss about colonialism. President Sukarno expressed sadness
over the deaths of people who fought to defend independence. President Sukarno recalled
the conference of the league against imperialism and colonialism that was held in Brussels
thirty years ago found new strength in their fight for independence. Some Asian and African
countries are not fully free yet from colonialism. This conference is made to aware Asian and
African countries to be united and responsible together to liberating countries from being
colonized. Even though Asian and African countries are different but unity can make nothing
is impossible. Colonialism has also in modern form. Such as economic control, intellectual
control, cultural control and indirect political control. We never realized that we are being
colonized. Asian and African countries are a greater diversity of religions, faiths and beliefs.
So, President Sukarno want this conference be a great success. “Live and let live” principle
and “Unity in diversity” motto the unifying force to being all together. President Sukarno
stated that if this conference succeeds, the effect of it will be great and seek an
understanding of each other to be united and hope this discussion will be profitable to all
people.
