SCOLIOSIS SCREENING
Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves to the side. It is an
abnormal lateral or side-to-side curvature of the spine. This condition
commonly develops during growth spurt of adolescents.
The following signs should be referred to a doctor for treatment:
o One of the shoulder blades is
more prominent.
o The head is not aligned to the
center of the pelvis.
o A hip appears higher or is more
prominent than the other.
o The rib cage is uneven.
o The waist is uneven.
o The entire body is leaning to one
side. Wikimedia commons

In the school, your school nurse or your health teacher can do the
scoliosis screening test. At home, you or your parents can help you check
your body alignment. When you notice one of the above-mentioned
symptoms, see a doctor for advice.

Breast Self-Examination
Every woman should do breast self-examination every month. The
steps in doing this are the following.
o Lie down on your back and place your arm behind your head. Use the finger
pads of the middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the right breast.
Over lapping dime size circular motions on the finger pads to feel the breast
tissue.
o Move around the breast in an up and down pattern starting at an imaginary line
drawn straight down your side from the underarm and moving across the breast
to the middle of the chest bone (sternum or breastbone).
o Repeat examination on your left breast, putting your left arm behind your head
and using the finger pads of your hand to do the same.
o While standing in front of a mirror with your hands pressing firmly down on your
hips, look at your breasts for any changes of size, shape, contour, or dimpling,
or redness of the nipple or breast skin.

Monitoring health status can be done through regular health
checkups and screening test appropriate for you. It is very important to
know your health status. For school age children and adolescents, the
school health personnel, such as the school physician, school nurse,
school dentist, as well as teachers and other school personnel perform
checkups and screening tests like scoliosis screening. Breast
examination can be done by yourself every month to keep you aware of
any problems occurring in your breast. It is very important that you are
aware of any change in your body. Any deviation from the normal must
be reported to your parents so that you can seek medical advice. Don’t
wait for your health problem to get worse. You have to act now.
