 Demonstrate health appraisal procedures during adolescence in order to achieve
holistic health
 Apply coping skills in dealing with health concerns during adolescence

Introduction:

Do you always feel tired and

overloaded with the learning
materials during this online
and modular class? class?

Do you study or work best during night time? Do you

extend more time in studying?

When was the last time you consult

your doctor/physician about your
health?

If you felt weak lately, always

remember to go back to why you
wanna succeed or learn. Go over
your goals in life!

You probably might have experienced all which are shown above. Nowadays,
you might be feeling physically and mentally tired because of all the workloads or
stacked modules to work on so it is always better to recognize and share your
1
health status with people around you and most specially with someone with health

DID YOU KNOW?

That your health matters in school! Your parents, the teachers, and the whole school (including
your classmates) care about your health (in different aspects)!! And you should too! In fact, every one of
us should take good care about our health!

Your health condition can contribute or inhibit you to function satisfactory in any activity at home, in school,
and in the community. It is recommended for the family and for the school community to have a complete
information about a student’s health because it may interfere with the learning process. A close collaboration
between schools and parents should be established to reinforce children’s health and support learning in multiple
settings at home, in school, in out-of school programs, and in the community.

LESSON FOCUS:
The health record and appraisal of the students by their family doctors or through the school health service
program serves several purposes. The following purposes:

 To provide an accurate appraisal of the student’s current health condition.

 To provide the following information needed by the parents and school personnel, like:
a. Whether the student is fit to join school activities and programs
b. The extent of services needed to benefit the students
 To diagnose any health problems which need further attention and treatment.
 To provide an opportunity for counseling both for the students and the parents regarding:
a. Any health problem diagnosed
b. Medical supervision and follow-up
c. Health support to the students

HEALTH APPRAISAL PROCEDURES

WHAT IS A HEALTH APPRAISAL?

It is a record of an individual’s fitness as well as one’s risk of developing certain illness and medical
conditions. Although a health appraisal can have many similarities to a physical examination, it tends to
place emphasis on future medical risks than a physical examination does.

 Height and Weight – You might have already gained increase in height weight at your stage
right now. Is it right? Peak weight gain follows the linear growth spur by 3-6 months in females
making them gain approximately 18.3 pounds or 8.3 kg per year during peak rates of weight gain
and approximately three months in males.
 Self-breast Examination for Girls
Breast examination is done to feel any changes that might have occurred in its structure. It is said
that a personal breast examination should be conducted every month. If you do this very often
then you develop an intimate understanding of the structure of your breast and this will enable
you to tell immediately if a lump, no matter how small, is present.

Do this! (Personal Breast Examination Test)

Face the mirror:

 Inspect both breasts with your arms at the sides.
 Raise your arms slowly and feel for any swelling or change in your breasts.

In the bathroom/shower
 Extend right arm upward and examine the breasts.
 Do the same with the left arm raised upward.

While lying in bed:

 Examine your right breast with right arm placed under your head.
 Examine left breast with left arm placed under your head.

 Testicular Examination for Boys

Teen boys are advised to have a regular monthly testicular self-examination. It takes
practice to do the testicular examination correctly and learning how to do it is a great step
towards taking care of one’s health. Testicular cancer commonly strikes those who are in their
mid-teens to their mid-twenties.

MONTHLY TESTICULAR
EXAMS
1. Take a warm shower or bath to help relax the skin of the
scrotum that lies over the testicles.
2. Examine the scrotum and look for any bumps or swollen
areas. Then have the areas examined by the doctor.
3. Gently hold one of the testicles between the thumb and
your index and middle fingers.
4. Roll the testicles between the fingers, taking notice if
there are any bumps or areas that seem irregular.
5. Feel the entire surface of one testicle.
6. Examine the second testicle the same way. If one
testicle seems larger than the other that can’t be
normal.

 Vision Screening
A vision screening is performed by an eye specialist to detect certain eye problems. The test
includes the use of the big E or Snellen Chart.

The Snellen Chart is an

eye chart that eye care
professionals use to
measure how clearly a
person can see.

Eye abnormalities that not treated

early can lead to vision loss and
blindness. It is recommended that
eye abnormalities be treated early.

The most common vision problems that an ophthalmologist evaluates include:

1. Strabismus – it is an eye condition described by the misalignment of the eyes,
which can be outward (extropia), inward (esotropia), upward (hypertropia) or
downward (hypotropia).
2. Amblyopia – a condition where the vision in an eye is poor because of lack of
use of the eye during early childhood. It is often called a “lazy eye”. Example of
this is when one eye is more farsighted than the other eye. This eye condition can
be cured or corrected by glasses.
3. Refractive Errors – it is common eye disorder when the eye fails to focus clearly
images.
Four common Refractive errors:
a. Hyperopia – more commonly known as farsightedness. It occurs when light
focuses behind the retina, thus making it difficult to see close objects clearly.
b. Myopia – more commonly known as nearsightedness. It occurs when light
focuses in front of the retina, thus making it difficult to see distant objects
clearly.
c. Astigmatism – distorted vision resulting from an irregularly curved cornea,
the clear covering of the eyeball.

D. Presbyopia – difficulty in reading or seeing at arm’s length, it is linked to

ageing and occurs universally.
