Types of Meaning
Phonological Meaning

Phonology is the study of


sounds.
It requires that we focus on
distinctive sounds or signals
that form a word so that we
can arrive at word meaning.
Differences in word meaning
may be attributed to the
differences in the vowel sounds,
consonant sounds, stress, pause or
intonations.

Meaning
Semantic is relating to meaning
or arising from distinctions between
the meanings of different words or
symbols”.
A. Homonyms and Heteronyms

Homonyms are words with


similar sounds but they differ
in meaning.
Homonyms

Heteronyms are words with


similar spelling but have
different pronunciations and
different meanings.

Affixes
An affix is a morpheme (syllable)
that is added to a rootword to form a
new word. An affix can either be a
derivational or inflectional affix.
Derivational Affix
- A morpheme or syllable which
when added to a rootword changes
its meaning. Some examples of
derivational affixes are: -tion, pre-,
pro-, re-, -ic, -hood, -er/-or, -ment,
anti-, and trans-

Inflectional Affix
-a morpheme which when added to

Compound words
These consist of two words that are
joined together to create a new
word with a new meaning.

The sequence or arrangement of
words in a sentence (word order) helps
us to make meaning.

Refers to the “meaning of utterances
in particular situations” (Flowerdew &

Some words may have similar spelling but


may vary in meaning depending on the
