* Can words and ideas really be stolen?

- This relates to the protection of intellectual property and

consideration of copyright laws.
Section 193 of the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines details
the rights of “authors” to their own works, including proper attribution
when used by another.

How to avoid plagiarism?

1. citing sources (APA 7th Edition)

2. paraphrasing and summarizing
• Paraphrasing involves re-writing a text so that the language is
substantially different while the content stays the same.

• Summarising means reducing the length of a text but retaining the

main points
Paraphrasing
- rewriting something “in your own words.”; good
alternative for direct quoting

Criteria:
1. easier to understand
2. about the same length/longer
3. same meaning with the original text
It’s Easy
JUST Acknowledge your sources

ACTIVITY
Plagiarism or Not
1. Copying a paragraph, but changing a few words and giving a citation.

YES

2. Cutting and pasting a short article from a website, with no citation.

YES
3. Using something that you think of as general knowledge, e.g. large
areas of rainforest have been cut down in recent years.

NO

4. Using a paragraph from an essay you wrote and had marked the
previous semester, without citation.

YES
Paraphrasing
Vocabulary: paraphrasing techniques

1) Use a synonym
This is important = This is significant / crucial / vital

2) Use an opposite
I found it difficult = It wasn't easy for me

3) Change active to passive

You should not do this = This should not be done

4) Use a related word (e.g. change the verb into a noun)

The number rose = There was a rise in the number
Steps
1. Read the text carefully. Underline, or note, any
important subject-specific words.

2. Identify any difficult words, and try to find

synonyms for them.

3. Try to find different ways of expressing the

information in the groups of words (phrases).
Steps
4. Rewrite each sentence. Try to simplify the
sentence structure and the vocabulary without
changing the meaning of the original text. The
sentence structures of the paraphrase should be
different with the original.

5. Put your text aside and write your paraphrase

from memory.
Steps

6. Revise what you have written, comparing it to

the original. Your paraphrase should clarify the
original but be written clearly in your own words.

7. Do not forget to use an in-text reference at the

start or end of your paraphrase.
