16. A solenoid is connected to an ammeter as shown in the diagram below. Initially, a bar magnet is
sitting inside the coil oriented as shown. This magnet is then quickly withdrawn to the right.

(a) Explain why a current is induced in the solenoid when the magnet is withdrawn. [1]

(b) The resistance of the solenoid is 2.00 Ω and the initial magnetic flux linkage through the solenoid
is 0.600 Wb. If the magnet is withdrawn completely from the solenoid in a time interval of 5.00
ms,
(i) Calculate the magnitude of the induced current in the solenoid. [2]

(ii) By using Lenz’s Law, determine the direction of the induced current measured by the
ammeter. [3]

(iii) Calculate the work done to withdrawn the magnet from the solenoid. [2]

17. An electron travelling at speed 1.00x107 m s-1 in a uniform electric field of electric field strength 100
V m-1 moves from point P to point Q as shown in the diagram below.

(i) Calculate the potential difference between the point P and Q. [2]

(ii) On the diagram above, show the possible path of the electron. Explain your answer.

(iii) Calculate the speed of electron when it reaches the point Q. [3]

18. a) Define resistivity of a material. [1]

b) Sketch graphs to show the variation of the resistivity ρ with the temperature for

c)

A resistor is made from a bar of semiconductor with a square cross-section 0f 1.00mm x 1.00 mm
and length of 2.00 cm. The semiconductor is doped so that there are 2.00 × 1018 free electrons per
cm3. The resistivity of the semiconductor is 4.00 × 10-3 Ωm.

If a potential difference of 4.0 V is maintained between the two opposite ends of the
semiconductor bar, calculate
i. the resistance of the bar, [2]
ii. the electric current in the bar, [2]
iii. the drift velocity of the free electrons in bar. [2]

d) A uniform magnetic field of 4.00 T is then applied vertically downward onto the
semiconductor in part (c) above.
(i) Explain how a Hall voltage is produced across the semiconductor. [3]
(ii) Calculate the magnitude of the Hall voltage. [2]

19. a) The potentiometer circuit below is used to measure the e.m.f of a thermocouple.

The uniform wire AB is 200 cm long and has a resistance of 5.0 Ω. If the thermocouple
gives an e.m.f of 40 µV for each degree centigrade temperature difference between the
junctions and has a resistance of 15Ω, calculate

i. the value of R for which potential difference across AB is 5.0mV, [2]


ii. the e.m.f. of the thermocouple at a temperature difference of 85˚C between its
junctions, [2]
iii. the length AC when the galvanometer shows zero deflection. [2]

If the e.m.f of the thermocouple is measured using a voltmeter with 25Ω resistance,

v. the temperature difference between the thermocouple junctions as indicated by this
voltmeter reading. [1]
b) i. What is a shunt? [1]
ii. State the function of a shunt. [1]
iii. Describe briefly, with the aid of a circuit diagram, how a shunt can be used in
measuring a large current by using a galvanometer without damaging it. [4]

20. (a) i. A thin bar magnet is placed in a uniform magnetic field. State the orientation of the poles of
the magnet relative to the direction of the magnetic field. [1 mark]
ii. Define magnetic flux density. [2 marks]
iii. state two differences between the force due to electric field and the force due to magnetic field
on a charged particle. [2 marks]
iv. A straight conductor of length L carrying a current I lies in a magnetic field of magnetic flux
density B which is perpendicular to the direction of current I. Starting from the magnetic force
due to a moving charge, derive an expression for the magnitude of the magnetic force on the
conductor in terms of L,I and B. [4 marks]
(b) i. The earth’s magnetic flux density is 2.0 x 10 T. A magnetic flux of equal magnitude can be

produced at a distance of 10.0 cm from a wire carrying a current I. Calculate the value of I required.

ii. Calculate the force per metre between two long parallel straight wires 10.0 cm apart, each
carrying a current equal to the value of I in (b)i. [2 marks]
iii. If the force produced in (b)ii above is a repulsive force, state the directions of the currents
flowing in the two wires. [1 mark]
