A CAGE NOW UNLOCKED, A FLOCK

NOW FREED
Weapons firing in war, peace was not present
Evidently, we never saw this coming,
Cries of torment and the pain of the people
How was it like to murder, leaving only blood and corpse?
Innocence? Its existence was worthless
Colonized, seized, bewildered, nowhere to turn to,
Under the British order, the arrival of Japanese during WWII
Destroying lives, perishing hope, we saw independence as a dream
131 years didn’t seem long, but tomorrow felt like a year later
Our freedom never was and will never be a story for the faint of heart.

Words cut deeper than a knife,

Wounded by an unguaranteed tomorrow,
How were we to know of the pain that we must face?
Peace came with a price, and so was the courage to fly free
Wild were the hearts of the imprisoned, patriotism was deep in their bones
How can we, say that independence is beyond reality, only a dream?
We have been under once, how is this any different?
We will fight, so pick up your guns if that is what they desire
Freedom is what we seek, and by any means necessary, we shall get

Lives were put to rest in peace, one by one,

Misery was evident, how could anyone not see?
Look up, can anyone see a better future for the nation now?
All for an independent country, the trapped wanted to break free,
Run, you weaklings, run! If the cruel are to leave, so be it!
Let the officials putting you down scurry off, for we will be free!
Our children, let them live, let them feel no need to bow before anyone!
Sacrifice, my fellow companions, and freedom will no longer be out of reach

Turmoil and suffering paid off after a long wait

For an effort to achieve independence was spearheaded by Tunku Abdul Rahman
With a delegation set off to Greater London
A negotiation was done, and a signature was implanted, merely ink on paper,
But to us it was everything we ever fought for
And on the 31st of August 1957, when the night was shining with stars galore,
And when midnight came, how joyous were we, we felt triumphant!
The National Anthem, oh how eager were the people just hearing this national song!
We were finally free, and 7 shouts louder than anything before!
“Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” were all that resounded in the air
This is the story of a country once tied down with chains of viciousness and struggle
But on the 31st August 1957, Malaya became a cage now unlocked, its people a flock now freed.
