What is it?

Analyse the illustration and try to elucidate your idea of what may be the
conversation about considering the context of communication. Write your idea on
given space.

What ‘s New?

The context dictates and effects the way people communicate which results in various speech
style. According to Joos (1968), there are five speech styles and are identified as: frozen, formal,
consultative, casual, and intimate. Each style dictates what appropriate language/ vocabulary should be
used or observed.

speech styles unconsciously.

Types of speech styles

 Intimate This style is private, which occurs between or among close family
members or individuals
The language used in this style may not be shared in public.
 Casual This style is common to peers and friends.
Jargons, slang, or the vernacular language are used.
 Consultative This style is a standard one. Professional or mutually acceptable
language is a must.
Examples of situation are communication between teachers and
students, doctor and patient, or employers to employees.
 Formal This is used in formal settings. Unlike consultative, this is one way.
Examples are sermons by priest, State of the Nation Address of the
President.
 Frozen This style is frozen in time and remains unchanged.
Common examples are the Preamble to the constitution, Lord’s
Prayer and Allegiance to country of Flag.

DIRECTIONS: Work with members in your family and try this. Using your knowledge about intimate
speech style, talk to your parents with the career you want as you finish Senior High School
Program. Create a graphic organizer on the important things you’ve shared to one another.

The different styles are important in speech-making because it will help you choose the
appropriate approach for different kinds of conversation and/ or for specific events. Picking the
correct speech prevents misunderstanding and conflicts.

What I have learnt?

Talking with your family, peers, and teachers or to some other people you may meet might be
different in terms of formality. The language you use may vary considering who you talk with. The kind
of language you used can effect communication. As you know, this may cause misinterpretation and
might lead to misunderstanding.

Knowing the types of speech style as another important lesson in communication, have you
noticed the significant role of language in attaining good communication? In what way you may apply it
in proper discourse manner i.e. to anyone down below?
