Rights and Responsibilities of Patients & Health

Patient rights defined as basic rules which are conduct between patient and medical
caregivers. As a patient receiving care, hold some responsibilities for receiving a
good quality care.
Patient Rights: - 
1.Right to good quality health care and treatment: - Every patient has
right to receive health services without discrimination. Patient can express any
special preference, spiritual or cultural need. Health care providers shall be
respected the culture and needs of individuals or to be treated with dignity. 
                    A patient who is terminally ill should provide proper treatment and care
to make dying as dignified and comfortable as possible.
2. Right to informed consent: - Patient has right to take decisions if a
physician decides upon carrying an invasive investigations, surgery, chemotherapy
on a patient . Firstly, doctor has right to explain the risks, consequences and
procedures of the investigation or surgery in detail and simple language. After that
take a consent from the patient or the responsible caretaker.
3. Right to refuse diagnostic and medical treatment : - The patient has
the right to refuse diagnostic and medical treatment procedures if the treatment is
being recommend for a non-life-threatening illness. For example, patient can decide
to stop using crutches after patient’s sprained an ankle. Moreover, patient refuse
treatment for emotional reasons. It will be painful or afraid from the side effects. 
4. Right to confidentiality, human dignity and privacy: - The patient has the right
to privacy. The right to privacy includes the keep private photography, video tapping
and discussion also not reveal his personal information, identity and circumstances
under which he was or medical or surgical care or treatment.
5. Right to choose alternative treatment options if available: - Nurses and
doctors are responsible for clarifying all treatment options to the patient and patient
can choose other options for a treatment that may or may not be the doctors primary
recommendation. This is also means that once the patient chooses alternative
treatment, they will shoulder the responsibility of its consequences.

Responsibilities As a patient

 Provide accurate information: - As a patient first responsibility is


provide accurate information about past illness, medications, family history,
life style habits and other information related to health. Everything tell to
physician is kept completely confidential. Patients’ honesty could ensure that
the treatment is successful.
 Inform the physician, if patient has any problems following the prescribed
treatment plan. Inform the physician if you might not able to completely follow
a treatment plan, tell the doctors about scheduling or other reasons.
 Ask the question when he/ she does not understand what the doctor or other
members of the health care team talks about diagnosis or treatment.
 Keep any appointments that you make or notify the centre and your treatment
team as early as possible if you are unable to do so.
 Patients’ main responsibility is following the prescribed and agreed treatment
plan with the instructions given.
Rights and responsibilities should be balanced. If the patient has rights and
responsibilities health care providers has also rights and responsibilities.

Rights of health provider: - 


1. All health worker have right to considerate and respectful behaviour from the
patients for whom they care and to be free from harassment, abuse, attack and
verbal and mental abuse. Along with this they have right to register a complaint
about a patient to hospital system.
2. Health worker has right to freedom of expression, this includes the right to express
themselves and their opinions without victimisation. health worker has right to notify
their patients of their services according to the hospital rules. 
3. Health workers have right to voluntarily form, join and participate in any
association. It includes right to serve his/ her duty in any camps and provide free
treatment to needy peoples and work with NGO's.
4. Right to social security, health workers apply for insurance and related benefits.
5. Health worker has right to make appropriate referrals to other organization and
hospital.

Responsibilities of the health provider : -


 To treat his/her patient equally and provide them with the same level of
concern and care without any discrimination. although workers have the right
to choose his/her patient, Health care worker have the duty not to harass
patients on the basis of sex, gender, race or culture.
 To protect the privacy and confidentiality of his/ her patients and to only
disclose health care, treatment, diagnostic and other health information with
the patients informed and written consent or when authorised by law or a
court to do so.
 To respect the religion beliefs and opinions of their patients, even if it differs
from their own. And not to force any patient to prescribe to any religious
practice.
 Not to practice hate speech or to subscribe to expression that is harmful to
others or is aimed at inciting harm and violence. Health workers main
responsibility to listen their patients and take their views into consideration.
 Health workers primary commitment is to her patients, to set appropriate
professional boundaries herself and her patients to maintain her objectivity
and prevent a conflict of interest.
