Introduction
In Lesson 1, we have discussed the importance and relevance of studying history as well as
familiarizing oneself about the different kinds of historical sources,
In this lesson, we will try to look at some selected primary sources in Philippine History from
different historical periods and evaluate said documents’ content in terms of historical value, and
examine the context of their production. The primary sources that we will examine are the following :
Antonio Pigafetta’s First Voyage Around the World; Emilio Jacinto’s Kartilya ng Katipunan; the 1898
Declaration of Philippine Independence; Political Cartoons of Alfred McCoy during the American Era and
Corazon Aquino’s Speech Before the U.S. Congress.
The material that is written about the given topic is the content of a document. The best way of
identifying the difference between the content and the context is to remember that content is what is
contained in the work whereas context is the circumstance that help us to understand the text.
The main difference between the two words content and context is that you “refer to a context”
and you “write the content.”
Content is the material dealt with in a speech and literary work. The material that in the work at
is written about the given topic is the content of the document. Content is what is contained in the work
whereas context is the circumstances that help us to understand the text. Context can refer to a
circumstance that shapes the setting for an event, idea or statement and in terms of which it can be fully
understood.
For example, the term historical context refers to the period of time in which something took
place or was created. If we are looking at a past custom or practice, we cannot understand it properly
without looking at the historical context.
