Prior knowledge: Children can read an information text.
Lesson Starter (5mins): The children watch a video on news and
headlines.
Connect (5mins): The pupils highlight the information
represented in the brochure.
Main (30 mins):

Zoom Interactive Session: After collating the feedback from the starter
activity,
- Children take turns reading the extract “ Mummy mystery
baffles experts.”
-The teacher explains that the author of the Newspaper article is
giving information about the desert. The use of time order words
in the instructions is highlighted.
- Based on the article read, children are asked to answer the
questions - Why? What? When? Where?
They are encouraged to look at the introductory paragraph in
particular and search the remaining part of the extract for the
main idea of the text.
-Children are asked comprehension questions based on activities
in the story.
Example:
1. Who is mentioned in the headline?
2. Which words makes the article sound interesting?
3. What do you think the article is about?
-Answers and comprehension strategies used to locate answers
are discussed by the class.

knowledge:
Lesson Starter (10 mins): The teacher places different age appropriate magazines and newspapers in
front of the class. Children are invited to study them and identify common features which
connect them to the topic.

Main (40 mins):

Zoom Interactive Session:

The class reviews the text “Boy, 3 discovers valuable treasure.” comparing features of recounts
in the text to those in the newspaper articles.
-The teacher and children then review a range of newspaper articles or magazines. key
language and presentational features are identified such as:
 Headlines, paragraphs, quotations and photographs (with captions);
 By-lines to show when and where the article was written and by whom;
 The use of alliteration in headlines;
 The use of 3rd person and past tense.
-The teacher explains that the author is not usually recounting an event that they participated
in, but reporting facts about an event that has happened elsewhere. They may also give an
opinion.
-The children are then asked to imagine that they are newspaper reporters who have been
asked to write about an event that took place at school. They are reminded of the features
needed for a recount:
 Past tense
 First person
 Introduction – answer question words - Who? Where? When? Why? What? How?
 Relevant vocabulary

Independent Activity (25 mins): Write a newspaper article about an event that took place at
school.
