Lesson

1 The Voice of the Verb

In English grammar, verbs have five properties:

voice, mood, tense, person, and number. Today, we
are going to focus on the voice. Now, what is the
voice of the verb?

Voice is a property of a verb which indicates

whether the subject is the doer or receiver of the
action.

What’s In

A. Guess if the underlined word is the Doer or Receiver of the Action, by looking
at the picture given. The verb is already given. Write whether the underlined
word is the Doer or Receiver of the Action. Write your answers in your
answer sheet.

1.David punched Steve in the face.

David verb Steve

2. Molten lava is spewed by the Mayon Volcano during its sporadic eruption.

3
verb

3. The girl cleaned her hands with soap and water.

verb

4
Notes to the Teacher
This module is designed and written to help students identify the
voice of verb in the given statements or sentences and use the
What’s New

A. Identify the Doer and the Receiver of the action in the following sentences.
Encircle the Doer and underline the receiver of the action. Write your answers in
your answer sheets.

1. The Japanese soldiers attacked the Philippines.

2. The Filipinos were attacked by the soldiers.

3. The Americans helped the Filipinos in this war.

4. The wounded were healed by the Filipino doctors.

5. President Quezon ensured an efficient and effective government.

6. President Aquino visits the victims of the typhoon.

7. The money is given by the old father to the boy.

8. The Department of Health spearheaded the clean-up drive to fight against

dengue.

9. The Grade 7 student was awarded by the principal in the poster making contest.

10. A group of parents donated books during the Book Campaign.

5
What is It

Read the following sentences with particular attention to the underlined subject of
each sentence.

1. My mother read a prayer aloud.

2. The prayer was read aloud by my mother.

What is the difference between the two sentences?

How can we know if the sentence is in the active voice or passive voice?

Active Voice
VS

Passive Voice

In the Active Voice, the subject is the DOER of the action.

While in the Passive Voice, the subject is the RECEIVER of the action.

In this case, in the first sentence:

My mother read a prayer aloud.

doer verb receiver

of the of the
action action

The subject is the doer of the action. Hence, it is in the Active Voice.

6
While in the second sentence:

The prayer was read aloud by my mother.

receiver verb doer

of the of the
action action

The subject is the receiver of the action. Hence, it is in the Passive Voice.

When do we use the Active Voice?

 Use the Active Voice if the subject of the sentence is performing the action or
causing the action. Thus, it is called as the “doer” of the action.
 Also use it, if you want your sentence to be direct and concise and if the
focus of your sentence is on the performer of the action. At times, strong
writing uses active voice.

For Example:

1. John ate nine doughnuts this morning.

doer receiver

2. Kelvin finished the 25-page essay last night.

doer receiver

3. Mrs. Clark pushed the panda.

receiver

4. The doctor greeted me.

doer receiver

7
What if we want to focus on the receiver of the action?
When do we use the Passive Voice?
 Use the Passive Voice if you want to focus your attention on the person or

Whenthing
do affected
we usebythe
the action or the who receives
Passive Voice? the action. Thus, it is
called as the “receiver” of the action.
 Passive voice most often focuses the action done and nothing about who
is doing it. Use it if you intentionally want to hide the doer of the action or
the subject of the sentence.
 We can recognize passive-voice expressions because the verb phrase will
often include a form of “be,” such as am, is, was, were, are, or been.
 It includes a “by (someone or something)” phrase after the verb:

For Example:

1. Nine doughnuts were eaten by John this morning.

r e c e iv e r doer

2. Children were harmed by unlicensed bus drivers.

receiver
doer

3. My car was stolen last night.

4. The camera was manufactured in Korea.

5. The Great Wall was built to protect China.

8

What I Have Learned

4 Lessons Which Must be Borne in Mind:

A. Voice is a property of a verb which indicates whether the subject is the doer
or receiver of the action.
B. Active voice is the voice used to indicate that the subject of the sentence is
performing the action or the “doer” of the action.
C. While, in the passive voice the subject always receives the action or the
“receiver” of the action.
D. The passive and active voices are two different ways to convey the same
information. Just know when and how to use them properly.

Do you have other ideas too? Great insights! Now, you are ready to move on the
next level.

10
What I Can Do

I have here some images for you to ponder on. Then, you are going to share
your thoughts about them. Ready? Here are the pictures about the current
happenings in our Municipality.

What do the pictures generally tell about our community? The pictures generally
show how the government officials show efforts to help the barangay or community.
How about you? what have you realized upon seeing the pictures? You can share
your impression and insights about the pictures to your family members.

We should always give a helping hand with others. Let us cooperate with our
government officials in their efforts to help the community, especially in these
trying times.
Are you familiar with a newspaper?

How does it function? What is its purpose? It serves as

the voice of the people, which is printed to disseminate
information and facts.

It acts as the voice of the people. If verbs have voice,

and so humans like us. Verb’s voice can be active or
passive, and most of us would love to be ‘active’. What
is the real essence of being active?

Being active is not just in words, but in action, as well.

You can also be active at the comfort of your own
home. If you want to have an active involvement with
all the academic activities in school, you can start
answering and studying your learning modules actively
in all subjects. You can also to be active- not just in social media, but in the actual
real-life situations. You can use your time on being productive. You can voice out
your ideas and principles, and solve your problems at home with corresponding
actions.
