This topic was selected due to the fact that teachers and students are sometimes unaware of
the library’s paid databases. Most students perform searches with Google that result in an
extremely large amount of information returned or inappropriate information.
This workshop will help to address and help solve a problem. For example, using the databases
will help to narrow the student’s focus on what their information need. In addition, Databases
provide reliable research sources and information the student can trust. The databases also
provide information in different formats such as video, text to speech, high lighted text,
animations, sound, music, visually graphic interfaces, and developmentally and age appropriate
material.
Learning Objectives:
1. Given a list of databases, the student (teacher) will be able to locate an animal of interest by
writing/drawing the information into an animal research log.
2. By the end of this lesson, the student (teacher) will be able to design a page for the riddle
book using the app Book Creator.
Opening Hook (Anticipatory Set): Ask the question, what is a database and why should students use
them? Discuss as a group and write down their responses on the smart board. After the discussion, show
a 2:34 minute video on What Are Databases?
Workshop Format: This workshop will be an in-person workshop before school and also in an online
format that teachers may watch at any time that is convenient for them.
The first workshop will be an introduction to the library’s databases. This workshop will consist
of a PowerPoint presentation, videos, discussions, and stations. Each station will consist of a
computer and one open database. Each station will have a different database. Participants will
spend some time trying out each database and noting what’s interesting about it.
that will entail designing a page that includes a riddle of an animal and its adaptation.
We will use the Book Creator app. I will introduce this app and model on the smart board how to
use it. Participants will then share what they have created.
The final workshop will consist of reflection and implementation. Participants will discuss any
issues they had with the databases or the app. Participants are welcome to bring in their
students riddle books to share as well.
