TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS
BULLETIN NUMBER: ST24-5001 10/20/93
APPLICABLE MODEL: FT4427/4727

SUBJECT: INTERMITTENT ST24 ENTRANCE MISFEED/COPIER IGNORES ST24

SYMPTOM:
The ST24 roller drive motor fails to energize resulting in a paper misfeed at the entrance to the ST24.
However, no misfeed is indicated and the copier returns to a "READY" condition after a brief "free-run"
period of approximately 10 seconds. Additionally, the copier does not display "C5" when the ST24 is opened
to remove the misfeed.

NOTE: This symptom does not occur if a menu reader (MR-20) is installed.

CAUSE:
Communication between the copier main board and the ST24 main board is interrupted by the interface
board.

FIELD/TEMPORARY PRODUCTION COUNTERMEASURE:

A jumper connector (P/N A0889500) for the interface board (CN 702) has been designed to eliminate the
communication error described above.

ORDERING PROCEDURE:
Technical Services has a supply of jumper connectors available at no charge for units exhibiting this
symptom. To obtain the jumper connector, please complete and fax the attached form to Technical Services.

FINAL PRODUCTION/PERMANENT COUNTERMEASURE:

The pull-up resistor (4.7k Ω) of the interface board will be changed to one of approximately 1.5k Ω . The
EDP number for the interface board (208282) will not change, however, the assembly number stenciled on
the interface board will change from A3445121B to A3445121C. This modification will be applied to the
November ’93 production.

SUBJECT: SORTER MISFEEDS

SYMPTOM:
Sorter bins stop in the wrong position and cause bin entrance misfeeds.

CAUSE:
During transportation, the bin lift wire loosens slightly on the wire pulley. As a result, the wire winds
incorrectly as shown in figure 1.

SOLUTION:
The bin lift wire has been lengthened as shown in figure 2. This will give another half turn of the lift wire
ensuring proper wire tracking on the wire pulley.

SUBJECT: ST24 ENTRANCE MISFEEDS

SYMPTOM:
In sort mode, the roller drive motor stalls resulting in entrance area misfeeds.

CAUSE:
Excessive load on the roller drive motor due to "gummed-up" bushings and pulleys in the roller drive section.

SUBJECT: ST24 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE AND VIDEO

GENERAL:
As part of Ricoh’s continuing policy to assure product performance by upgrading the quality of
its products and support to the field, Ricoh Corporation has developed a Troubleshooting Guide and Video to
aid technicians in troubleshooting ST24 misfeeds.

If used in conjunction with the Troubleshooting Video provided, this guide will resolve the majority of
misfeeding problems the field is experiencing.

In addition to the troubleshooting materials listed above, the following parts have been modified:

• UPDATE NO. 1 - Due to manufacturing requirements, the sorter bins have been modified (they are
slightly different in shape). The old style bins are no longer available, however, the
part number (A3743505) remains the same.

Although it is technically no problem to mix the old and new bins, it is

recommended to use the new bins for upper positions and the old bins for lower
positions. This maintains a good unit appearance and places the new bins in
positions which are more frequently used.

ORDERING PROCEDURE:
Ricoh Corporation will automatically ship one (1) set (20 bins / set) of new style ST24 sorter bins per every
ten (10) ST24 Sorter Staplers shipped based on Ricoh’s Equipment Shipped Records.

Ricoh Corporation is providing these bins at no charge due to bin guide mylars mis-positioned during
production. Please reference section 3, page 6 of the ST24 Troubleshooting Guide.

• UPDATE NO. 2 - BIN HOME POSITION SENSOR - The width of the interrupter for the bin home
position sensor has been increased from 4.5mm to 5.5mm to ensure sensor
actuation. The part number for the Home Position Sensor has not been changed.

FIELD COUNTERMEASURE
To modify machines in the field, adhere a black mylar strip (A3749500) as illustrated on page 2.

This part is available through normal NSPC channels.

• UPDATE NO. 3 - SPRING PLATE MOUNTING SCREW AND HEXAGON NUT - A hexagon nut [A]
(07100050B) has been inserted between the Spring Plate [B] and the Exit Roller
Guide [C] to reduce the angle [θ] between the guide and paper. Due to this
modification, the length of the screw [D] (03440080F) fixing the Spring Plate has
been changed from 6 mm to 8 mm.
