Teaching mothers of

hyperthermic pediatric
patients to perform tepid
sponging
Objective

● At the end of this session the mothers will be able to :

● Define Hyperthermia

● List at least two of the therapeutic interventions for hyperthermia

● Explain the meaning of tepid sponging

● demonstration correct technique of tepid sponging

● Express any feeling of confidence to perform proper technique of tepid sponging to their child
Introduction

● One of the non-pharmacological actions is Tepid Sponge.

Tepid Sponge is a procedure to increase the control of body
temperature through evaporation and conduction which is
usually conducted to the high fever client. The purpose of this
action is to decrease the body temperature of hyperthermia
patient.
General Objective:
Purpose
To provide mothers of hyperthermic
pediatric patients with necessary
information to perform tepid
sponging
Goal

The mothers will independently

perform a proper technique of
tepid sponging for their child.
Specific Objective

At the end of the education lecture on hyperthermic
pediatric patients to perform tepid sponging the mother
will able to :

• Define Hyperthermia

• List therapeutic interventions for hyperthermia

• Explain the meaning of tepid sponging

Define
Hyperthermia
indicates a group of heat-related conditions that are characterized
by an abnormal high body temperature.
Hyperthermia takes place when the body can no longer release
enough of its heat to maintain a normal temperature. This may be
the result of having some infections or define diseases.

In regard to humans, the core body temperature ranges from about 95.9°F
to about 99.5°F during the day, or 35.5°C to 37.5°C. On the other hand,
individuals with some level of hyperthermia have a body temperature of
more than 100.4°F (38°C).
List therapeutic interventions for hyperthermia
• Dressing the patient with lightweight clothing.

• Keeping the patient cool by providing a fan or

nurse him in air-conditioner room.

• Sponging the patient with tepid water.

• Take a cool bath if necessary.

• Increasing fluid intake if the person has no fluid

restriction. Fluid may be in the form of water,
iced drinks form, ice-blocks, jelly, juices, or
whatever he will drink.
Explain the meaning of tepid sponging

It is a non-pharmacological treatment that

can be done independently to reduce
the body temperature of patients with
fever by hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy
is a water use therapy to cure and
relieve fever. Tepid sponging is the
application of water to the patient’s skin
surface in order to promote dispersal of
body heat when the body temperature is
39.5°C and over. The procedure is based
on the principles of evaporation and
conduction.

After watching a demonstration on hyperthermic
pediatric patients, the mother will able to :

• Return demonstration correct technique of tepid

sponging
Return demonstration correct technique of tepid sponging
1. Prepare the following items:
Basin of tepid water (29°C – 32°C)
Bath blanket
Face and body Towels and wash cloth
Mackintosh and draw sheet
Thermometer

2. Wash hands

3. Draw the sheet and Mackintosh on the patient bed and Position
the patient comfortably in the bed. Then Check the initial
temperature. Tepid sponging should be performed in case of the
body temperature is above 39oC (102.2oF).

4. Place bath blanket over the patient

5. Remove the patient clothes. Expose only the body part to be sponged.
Keep the rest of the body cover.
Return demonstration correct technique of tepid sponging
6. Place wash cloth in each axilla, groin, head and neck area.

7. Stroke the right arm from the neck to the axilla and down to
the palm of the hand.

Note:
Change sponge cloth when it becomes warm.
Change the water in case of it becomes dirty and check the
temperature

8. Sponge the left arm, chest and abdomen

Note:
Change sponge cloth when it becomes warm.
Change the water in case of it becomes dirty and check the
temperature.
Return demonstration correct technique of tepid sponging
9. Sponge the right lower limb form groin to foot

Note:
Change sponge cloth when it become swarm.
Change the water in case of it becomes dirty and check the temperature

10. Sponge the left lower limb from groin to foot

Note:
Change sponge cloth when it become swarm.
Change the water in case of it becomes dirty and check the temperature

11. Bathe the back and buttocks.

Note:
Continue this procedure for a period not exceeding 15 minutes.
Take the temperature.
Then proceed as follows:

a. If temperature > 38oC, repeat procedure for a further 15 minutes and take the
temperature. If there is no change inform call for emergency
b. In case of the temperature is 1oC above normal, stop the procedure.

During a group discussion the mother will able to :

• Verbalize feeling of confidence to perform proper

technique of tepid sponging to their child
Verbalize feeling of confidence to perform proper
technique of tepid sponging to their child

The majority of healthy adults have the ability to tolerate fevers as

high as 103–104°F (39– 40°C) for short periods of time without having
problems. However, temperatures between 105.8–109.4°F (41–43°C)
are serious and require medical attention. Temperatures more than
109.4°F (43°C) are almost always fatal (deadly). To avoid all these
consequences you should feel of confidence of performing proper
technique of tepid sponging to their child.

On a scale from 0 to 10,

0 means have no confidence to perform proper technique of tepid sponging to

my child,

10 means have a great confidence to perform proper technique of tepid

sponging to my child, What the sore will you give yourself?
Affective question

01 Why did you give yourself this score?

02 What areas of weakness do you think you It

need improvement?
Conclusion

● A tepid Sponge is a procedure to decrease the body

temperature of hyperthermia patient. The mothers are
expected to provide Tepid Sponge for their child who has
increased body temperature.
