Wiraningsih, P., & Santosa, M. H. (2020). EFL teachers' challenges in promoting learner

autonomy in the 21st-century learning. Journal on English as a Foreign Language, 10(2),

290-314. https://doi.org/10.23971/jefl.v10i2.1881

Read your chosen article and answer the following questions:

What are the objectives of this research?

R/ This descriptive qualitative study aimed to describe the challenges in promoting learner

autonomy in 21st-century learning faced by EFL teachers and their strategies.

What are the research questions?

R/ -¿What are the challenges in promoting learner autonomy in the 21st century learning

faced by EFL teachers?”

-¿How do the EFL teachers face the challenges?”

What is its significance in the field of language learning?

R/ The result of the present study revealed that educational and institutional policy,

language teaching, and learner’s background were identified as the challenges faced by

EFL teachers in promoting learner autonomy in 21st-century learning. The EFL teachers

have applied some strategies and approaches in transforming challenges such as initiate

learning, collaborative learning strategy, planning, and time management. Through this

identification, it was expected that the learners get a better educational experience.
STEP 3. MY RESEARCH IDEA

Write 2 research questions, 1 general objective, 3 specific objectives and the significance of

the study in our field for your research idea.

My research idea is: Limitations in the teaching of the English language in the rural

context

Research question 1:

What strategies could be applied to improve the teaching-learning process of English in

rural schools?

Research question 2:

Do students in an urban school and a rural school learn the same?

General objective

Investigate teaching practices when teaching English in a context rural in educational

institutions. Specifics Objetives

Specific objective 1: Propose alternative learning environments to analyze their effect on

learning of English as a foreign language in rural areas.

Specific objective 2: Collect information on the characteristics of English language

teaching in rural areas

Specific objective 3: Raise awareness about the relationship between the foreign language

(English) and rural áreas

Importance of the study in our field for your research idea:

Due to the experience I tried to relate my experiences with what I have studied

professionally, which is teaching foreign languages. I think convenient explain that I have

selected English, since this language is taught throughout the country. In rural contexts

there is a factor that cannot be ignored and that directly affects not only the teaching-

learning of English, but education in general: the conflict armed. This has affected

Colombia in different ways, especially in the context rural, where violence has been

experienced directly. Furthermore, the educational material conditions do not favor the

teaching of English or other subjects. First, the difficult access to technology or information

such as the internet constitute an additional difficulty, since through different means of

communication how the newspaper and television news report on this worrying situation.

TASK 3.

QUANTITATIVE

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

Try to definitely prove something Difficulty understanding the attitude of the

individual as this research focuses on data
Look at the data, the description, the breakdown
of the population by age, gender, etc. Participants cannot explain their choice is just a
yes or no answer on a rating scale
Easy to understand
Gives participants a limited choice of opinion
Try to keep things in order

Can use large samples

Allows you to compare results over time

OPPORTUNITES THREATS

Seeks to establish the laws of behavior Research is not in its natural environment

Allows you to compare results over time When it comes to understanding a topic you

cannot focus on it

Allows you to compare results between

segments Does not allow to delve into the reasons for the

behavior
QUALITATIVE

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

Gives an interpretation of the experience of the It is complex and abstract to understand

individual participating in the research
Difficult to use large-scale samples
See things in their natural environment
Criticized for its validity of the data it is
Gains an understanding of the perceptions of trying to analyze
the people involved in the research
Does not allow comparison of results over
Helps to a deeper analysis of the research topic time

To be able to observe live the scenario to be

studied, as well as the subjects that will be the
object of the investigation

OPPORTUNITES THREATS

It is used when historical information is not Often biased based on people's potentially
available or data is scarce optimistic or pessimistic position

It allows a deep investigation in the thematic Results cannot be generalized
