Robots in Industry
Industry usually uses humans in manufacturing operation but today it is including different robots in the
development of specific tasks to ensure better results and avoid accidents. According to the International
Federation of Robotics, different industries are using around 1.3 million industrial robots this year.
Today’s industrial robots work in a wide range of industries, from semiconductors and automobiles to
plastics processing and metal forging. Repetitive operation is a great and very common job for a robot,
particularly if it’s dangerous or difficult for people.
At the same time, these robots are helping manufacturers address many of the key challenges they face,
including tight labor pools, global market competitiveness and safety.
1. Better quality and consistency: Along with other tech — such as the industrial internet of
things (IIoT) or 3D printing robots — industrial robots are able to provide better production
quality and more precise and reliable processes.
2. Maximum productivity and throughput: An industrial robot increases speed for
manufacturing processes, in part by operating 24/7.
3. Greater safety: Using robots for repetitive tasks means fewer risks of injury for workers,
especially when manufacturing has to take place under hostile conditions.
4. Reduced direct labor costs: The cost of having a person handle many manufacturing operations
is often more expensive than robot. This can also free up workers so their skills and expertise can
be used in other business areas such as engineering, programming and maintenance.
4.
ACTIVITY 1 – Observe the picture below and write 1 or 2 more advantages and disadvantages
of using robots in industry. Justify your answer. (in Spanish)
Advantages:
1. Robots increase the speed of production and are working 24 hours a day.
(Una de las ventajas de los robots es que pueden trabajar un día completo lo dice en el
artículo)
2. Generates less burden on workers and increases work efficiency
(Aquí explico cómo los robots pueden alivianar la carga a los trabajadores y además son
precisos al trabajar difícilmente cometen errores)
Disadvantages:
1. The robots require a large investment for their use and maintenance.
(Como los robots necesitan una gran inversión para su uso sin eso no recibirían el
mantenimiento adecuado y podrían estropearse)
2. There are only a limited number of people who know how to maintain the robots properly. and
have a wide range of knowledge.

ACTIVITY 2 – Read and apply the READING COMPREHENSION TECHNIQUES to the article,
then answer to the following questions in Spanish according to the text read “Robots in
Industry”.
