Sexual Self

From what I have understood in the document, desire is the innate nature of
living creatures that procreate via sexual intercourse. Much like that of how we breathe
and how we feel hunger, it is natural. Just like any other natural occurrences in the
universe, there is a scientific explanation as to how we feel sexual desires or attraction.
From the document, it states that desire is the complete result of visuals, biochemical,
emotional, and biomechanical signals that activates the hormones responsible to
reproduction. Personally speaking, I have always believed that humans experience
emotion because of the inner workings of the human body at atomic level. The survival
instincts of a person accounts to the sudden surge of adrenaline in the body, the growth
and development of a human body is caused by the growth hormones released in the
pituitary gland, hunger is caused by hunger hormones, even happiness, loneliness,
longing for someone, and sadness are caused by an abundance or lack of hormones
(Like dopamine or serotonin), even love! And this belief of mine has further been
strengthened when I read the document we were given.
Desire is simply evolutionary. Before, I believe that cavemen only had desire for
the members of their society to show qualities that could benefit their survivability such
as strength, speed, and hunting skills. For animals, they choose a partner based on
strength because it is a sign of power and authority, but practically it is for the protection
of their young. Today, preferences changed, much like how evolution works. Now, good
looks, fame, money, and power arouses many people. Sometimes the qualities of a
person to have talent and skills attract others. And that is how preferences have
changed, according to my experience at least. My father always taught me and my
siblings to choose a partner who is willing to work with us together whenever we decide
to marry. Because, just like how Dr. Dobresnski says, my father also thinks that it is for
the sake of the future generation, basically for reproduction to be successful. And I
agree with both of them.
Just like how animals excrete pheromones to attract potential partners, we
humans have also developed perfumes for that purpose. The scent I would choose to
buy from a perfume store will most likely have someone fall for me and start to like me,
just from the scent alone. This is because the nose being a sensory organ, relays the
information to the brain, that information activates the brain to release hormones (such
as estrogen and testosterone) making the person think that they like the person they
have just smelled. That is what I understood from what Dr. Fields claimed. It makes
sense that the brain would release estrogen and testosterone when we are “turned on”,
because it all results to reproduction or simply, the act of reproduction itself — sex.
