CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

The purpose of this study is timely within the experiences of the students during the global

pandemic-related quarantine, which affected classes in the Academic Year 2020-2021. Due to

the pandemic's existence and the need for distance learning, online classes are being held to

replace face-to-face classes as the new normal adjustment to secure the safety of the individuals

or communities participating in order to avoid infection by the virus. Even before the epidemic

broke out and quarantine rules were created, several colleges began using online classes.

However, this would be the first time for San Sebastian College-Recoletos Canlubang (SSC-R

Canlubang) to use an online classroom setup.

The epidemic of COVID-19 has brought in a new phase in online education. Many professors

have had to quickly pivot to offer their courses online due to physical campus closures. Many

newcomers to online learning are now delivering their courses remotely in the current

atmosphere. This is most often the case when there is little or no training on how to create a

successful online learning environment Many instructors are using the internet to produce

information in some way, but they lack the knowledge and skills to reap the benefits of all that

the internet has to offer, such as reliable and intelligent discussions with student performance, the

potential to develop a more accessible and inclusive atmosphere through the use of universal
design principles, and the ability to implement a variety of different technology tools to

effectively support the learner (Mathes, J. 2020).

The COVID-19 pandemic focused attention on this outdated system, exposing its numerous

weaknesses and areas for development. There's no doubt that the gradual shift to online learning

has put a spotlight on the administrators, professors, parents, and students who have worked

tirelessly to make distant learning succeed despite the odds. However, given the specific

circumstances, the outcome was understandably less than ideal. Professors have struggled to

prepare, manage, and assess lessons, and students have questioned the quality-to-cost ratio of

their education, which has already been damaged by the ongoing increase in tuition costs (Timis,

D., & Kodjabachi A. 2020) .

Online learning makes use of the internet as a delivery medium to provide well-thought-out,

high-quality, student-centered learning experiences based on attempted best practices that foster

productive interactions among students, peers, instructors, and content. We obtain a more

thorough understanding of the complexity that makes online learning a dynamic modality when

we look at it from this larger perspective. So, while the current use of remote learning

technologies isn't ideal, it doesn't rule out the possibility of improving our preparedness for the

next natural disaster or severe crisis. COVID-19 presented us with a scenario that many thought

was impossible in today's environment. Unfortunately, the truth of modern life is that situations

like this are likely to recur. Before the next disruption hits our world, we must apply the lessons

we've learned throughout this crisis and take the actions necessary to improve the quality of the

digital learning experience for students (and teachers). It remains to be seen whether online

learning acceptance will continue post-pandemic, but one thing is certain: the health crisis has

upset an education system that was already losing relevance (Mathes, J. 2020).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the impact of online distance learning on the academic

performance of senior high school students in San Sebastian Canlubang.

Specifically, the study aimed to answer the following questions:

1. Are the new learning modalities effective or not?

2. How has distance learning affected students in Canlubang?

3. How many students agreed and disagreed with the new learning modality?

Hypothesis

This study attempted to test the following null hypothesis at .05 level of Significance so there

is no significant impact of online distance learning on the academic performance of Senior High

school students.

Theoretical Framework

This research study will tackle more about the impact of online distance learning. And to

begin with, Teachers, students, and their parents have faced difficulties as a result of the closing

of schools. Time spent out of school can have a negative impact on a child's educational

outcomes and future well-being. To help students cope with the negative effects of physical

closures, several institutions now offer entirely online classes. The examination and evaluation of

online elearning for students' academic performance is critical, particularly during a severe

pandemic such COVID-19 (Clark, A. E., Nong, H., Zhu, H., & Zhu, R. 2021).
Due to the coronavirus, many universities and colleges around the world have shifted to online

education. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to see if COVID-19 lockdown affected

veterinary medical students' and researchers' academic performance. A google form survey was

sent out to veterinary medical students and researchers. The questionnaire was completed by

1,392 people from 92 countries, with a 94.1 percent response rate. The statistics revealed that the

COVID-19 pandemic lockdown had a moderate to severe impact on the academic achievement

of the majority of participants (96.7%). The mean assessment score for online education, in

general, was 5.1-2.4, while the practical elements received a score of 3.6-2.6. Although online

education allows for self-study, the key problem in veterinary medical science is how to deliver

practical teachings. Because the majority of the subjects are practical, learning them online is

difficult. Students believe that completing veterinary competency only through online education

is challenging. Making online education more interactive, presenting medical procedures in real-

life circumstances, delivering clear information, and providing 3D virtual instruments to imitate

the real situation could all help (Mahdy, M. A. 2020).

RECOMMENDATION

Figure 1   shows the conceptual framework of the study:

In this research, the researchers were able to study the impact of online distance learning on

the academic performance of senior high school students. The researchers gathered data

regarding the variables stated and determined their positive and negative impact, then the

researchers are going to analyze the data in order to come up with a conclusion about the impact
of online distance learning on the academic performance as answered by the senior high

students. The researchers analyzed and interpreted the situation. Lastly, the researchers gave

recommendations for future purposes.

Scope and Limitation

The study we have chosen focuses on students studying in canlubang. Our chosen respondents

are students who are studying in senior highschool. Online learning may be the new normal to

almost every student but we decided to focus on senior highschool students because we, also

senior highschool students, want to know our peers, perspectives or view on the impact of online

learning. This study will exclude college students and junior highschool students from the survey

because we are only interested in senior high school students. We are focusing only on students

in Canlubang because our knowledge of other students outside is limited.

Significance of the study

Through the study conducted, the researchers will be able to discover the impact of online

distance learning on the academic performance of senior high school students in San Sebastian

College-Recoletos Canlubang, And here in our conducted research, we have three targets that

will benefit from our research,

This study is going to be beneficial to the following:

To the students. The study will be able to help the students of Sebastian College-Recoletos

Canlubang regarding the impact of online distance learning on academic performance, and also

for them to know the perspective of other students, and for them to judge if the online distance

learning is effective for them.

To teachers. For them to know whether online learning is effective or not  and better efficiency

of the online class experience with reference to the student’s perspective.

To future researchers. The study will be able to help the future researchers conduct an efficient

study on the topic. and It will help provide the future researchers information, improved

knowledge, and an idea that will help result in an effective resolution.

Operational Definition of Terms
