Pramoedya Ananta Toer, or also known by his nickname “Pram”, is one of the famous
Indonesian authors. He is well-known for his novel “Bumi Manusia” as one of his tetralogy
books which were written in Buru Island. He also wrote more than 50 other books and novels.
Almost all of his books and novels had been translated to 42 foreign languages.
Pram was born in Blora, Central Java, 6 th February 1925. He was the first son of Mr. Mastoer
Imam Badjoeri, a principal in one of Boedi Oetomo’s school, and Mrs. Oemi Saidah. When Japan
ruled in Indonesia, Young Pram worked as a typist and corrector at Domei news agency
(ANTARA news nowadays) and soon he became a productive writer who wrote article, short
stories, poems, and novels. During his career as an author, Pram wrote books and novels which
were filled with satire social criticism. It made him arrested and sent to jail for many times
because he was considered to make rebellious movement against the government. In colonial
era, he was imprisoned for 3 years and during President Soekarno’s cabinet, he was imprisoned
for a year.
Some of his books was banned and marked as forbidden book by Suharto’s regime with alibi
that his book contained communist ideology. However, Pram never gave up on his passion and
keep produced book even in the jail. His famous masterpiece, The Tetralogy of Buru Island, was
written when he was imprisoned in Buru Island without any court proceed.
He was literary unstoppable in writing. Until the end of his life he was active in writing, even
though his health steadily declined due to his old age and his bad habit for smoking. Pram died
in 30th April 2006. He left us a spirit of writing freedom and never give up to write for justice. He
showed us that even the prison wall couldn’t limit people’s mind and creativity.

Soetomo, or generally known as Bung Tomo, is one of Indonesian heroes who struggled by
jumping into the war between Indonesia and the allies after 17 of August 1945. We commonly
see his photograph as a man in army uniform yelling his speech in front of spider web look-like
banner and pointing his finger to the sky. This photograph is often used as the depiction of the
spirit from Arek-Arek Suroboyo (Surabayan men) when fighting the enemies.
Soetomo was born in Surabaya, October 3rd 1920. His father was a nobleman named Kartawan
Tjiptowidjojo and her mother was half blood of Javanese and Maduranese named Soebastita.
As a child of a nobled family, Soetomo got his education but unfortunately the world crisis forced
him to stop his education in MULO (Junior High School). Later on, he could continue his
education to HBS (Senior High School) level and he showed his concern in scouts and reached
the level of Pandu Garuda (Highest rank of Indonesian Scouts) when he was 17.
Soetomo continued his career as a journalist in some newspapers such as Ekspres, Soeara
Oemoem, and Poestaka Timoer. Being a journalist turned him into a fluent public speaker and
opened his relation to social and politic activities. He also built his way as an orator to local
radios in Surabaya. He was elected to lead the Gerakan Rakyat Baru (New Citizen Movement)
in Surabaya. He continued to lead the Barisan Pemberontak Rakyat Indonesia (Indonesian
Rebels Front) and it was his first way to step into 10 November Clash in Surabaya.

During the clash of 10 November 1945 in Surabaya, Soetomo or Bung Tomo, burnt the spirit of
Surabayan people to fight the enemies. His oration was aired in local radio and was full of
motivational words that touched every listener. He succeeded to turn up the spirit of Surabayan
and it made them had no fear in facing the enemy. Although Surabaya fell to enemies’ hand
because of Indonesia was lack of weapons and ammunition back then, the heroes could give a
big push back to the enemies.
He continued his struggle not only during the war, but also in Indonesian government when he
saw unfair policy during Soeharto’s era. He was imprisoned in April 11th 1978 after accused for
doing subversive actions in his speech and criticisms to Soeharto.
As a religious person, Soetomo also fulfilled his obligation as a Moslem by doing the Hajj. Bung
Tomo died in Arafah, Saudi Arabia when he was doing his pilgrimage on 7 th October 1981. He
was buried in public cemetery in Ngagel, Surabaya, not in heroes’ cemetery. He was awarded
as national hero in 2008.
What we can learn from Bung Tomo is his struggle by using his ability in public speaking. Being
an orator was very important back then since people needed someone who can motivate them.
We all know that Indonesia was short of technology, ammo, and weapons. Relying on
motivation and people spirit was the only thing we could do during that time, and Bung Tomo
was a true brave heart from Surabaya that we can use him as our role model in this era.

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May the 14th, 1984. He is the creator of the social media
site Facebook. He was a star student at school, winning prizes in astronomy, math and physics.
He also excelled in Classical studies. He studied Psychology and Computer Science at Harvard
University, which is where he created Facebook. His invention led to his becoming Time
magazine’s Person of the Year for 2010.
Zuckerberg excelled in everything he did in his youth. He was captain of the school fencing
team, spoke many languages and was a highly skilled computer programmer. While other kids
played computer games, he designed them. He created his first network while in high school to
connect all of the computers in his father’s dental surgery. He also built a media player which
attracted the interest of Microsoft and AOL.
Zuckerberg started at Harvard in September 2002. In his first year, he created Face mash, a
Facebook predecessor, that let students select the college’s best look people from a selection of
photos. He launched Facebook from his Harvard room in February 2004. It was the start of a
rollercoaster ride that would connect half a billion people worldwide and make him the world’s
youngest billionaire.
Mark Zuckerberg is now one of the most influential people on the planet. He has dined with the
president of the USA and regularly attends global economic summits and technology forums. He
stated: "The thing I really care about is the mission, making the world open." In 2010,
Zuckerberg signed a promise called the "Giving Pledge", in which he promised to donate at least
half of his life wealth to charity.
