FINAL EXAM

Duration: 135 Minutes

FALL 2020

IMPROPER COLLABORATIONS SHALL BE GRADED WITH N/A

All problem solutions should include units, clear and complete free body daigrams. The
answers should be boxed. Write your names and surnames on the answer sheets.

Q1) (30 Pts)

Draw the shear force-bending moment diagram of the beam shown below. There are internal
hinges at B and E. There is a hinge support at C and roller supports at A, D and F. The beam
supports two point loads which are located at points C and D.
Q2) (25 Pts)

Find the support reactions of the frame shown below. There is a fixed support at Point A and
roller supports at Points B and F. Point C and Point E are internal hinge locations.

Q3) (25 Pts)

Locate the centroid 𝑦̅ of the composite area (distance from the bottom), then calculate the
moment of inertia and radius of gyration about centroidal x’ axis.
Q4) (10 Pts)

A steel pipe having yield stress σy=135 MPa is to carry an axial compressive load P=2400 kN.
A factor of safety of 2.2 against yielding is to be used. If the thickness t of the pipe is to be one-
eighth of its outer diameter, what is the minimum required outer diameter d min?

Q5) (15 Pts)

A hollow, circular, steel column (E= 200,000 MPa) is subjected to a compressive load P, as
shown in the figure. The column has length L= 18 m and outside diameter d=0.5 m. The load
P= 285 kN . If the allowable stress is 120 MPa and the allowable shortening of the column is
3.75 cm, what is the minimum required wall thickness t min?
