Read the passages and fill in the corresponding parts in the table.
Look at the stories of the centurion (7:1-10) and compare with the forgiven woman (7:36-50). Is
there a pattern in the way the story is presented?
- The centurion and the woman either themselves or someone else went to Jesus.
Is this pattern true for Jesus raising the man from the dead (7:11-17) and John’s Messengers (7:18-
35). If not what is different about these stories?
- In v11-17 we see instead he comes to the widow and says to her do not weep and has
compassion and raises the man to life?
- These stories are different in that John’s messengers ask for clarification of who Jesus is
instead of already knowing/ trusting who he is. Then the Isaiah 35 imagery is referred to but
then we end the story with Jesus calling the Pharisees hard of heart/ irresponsive to the
message (v31-35).
Jesus refers to Isaiah 35 in his response to John’s messengers what do we learn by him doing this?
- We learn he is referring to himself as the one who is sent by God and God will save them.
Based on what we have seen in previous chapters about baptism, why does Luke link the
different responses to Jesus with baptism/ what does it say about these groups of people?
(v29-30)
- Pharisees haven’t turned away from their sin therefore the response they give is they do not
understand.
What do we learn about what repentance based on the stories in this chapter?
