Assessment Task 6-1

I. To check your understanding of the lesson, answer the following:

1. What are the hurdles of accessing art in terms of its subject and content?

The hurdles of accessing art items are the art itself, the art is often complex. Art is having a large part in
our life and it cannot explain as the same thinking of different person, it has a deep meaning and
understanding in every art. That’s why understanding of the art piece is problematic in the sense that it
is complex and can’t be reduced to only the one artwork itself. To really understand the content of the
art, we should look into the complex background of the piece, who is the artist. We should see where
they got their information, who they were emotionally, and how they conveyed their life into the art.

2. Where do artists source their subjects?

co
eH w
The artist usually used their imagination with having inspirations or their sense to source their subjects.
Some experience is very helpful to start their creation with having full knowledge on how they can build

o.
that artwork with having a beautiful outcome. The process of art making begins with the question, what
rs e
should I create, maybe we don’t know how to begin even if we have some ideas but with the help of
ou urc
motivations, intention of ideas behind your arts we can actually start. Artists can also source their
subjects from nature, history, religions and everything behind him/her; we only need to use our sense of
o

imagination.
aC s

From looking at other art it is the best way to adopt and to learn from them, movies and even in social
vi y re

media we can consider it as a source of subject to find inspirations. And being out in nature, in the wild
elements, is an amazing source of artistic inspiration and is also very good for the soul.

3. Name an example of an artwork and speculate on the content of the artwork based on its factual,
ed d

conventional, and subjective meanings.

Napoleon crossing the Alps, Neo-Classical Period, oil-on-canvas.

The oil on canvas painting “Napoleon Crossing the Alps,” belongs to the Neoclassical Period. Around
is

1765–1830, under the artistic movement Neoclassicism. It shows Napoleon positioned riding a Horse
while pointing his right hand towards the other side like he is showing courage and leading an army to
Th

the other side of the Alps.

The Napoleon crossing the Alps was painted by Jacques-Louis David, a French painter in the neoclassical
style. J.L. David is considered as one of the greatest painters during the neoclassical period. The
sh

commission specified a portrait of Napoleon standing in the uniform of the First Consul but J.L. David
was keen to paint an equestrian scene. At first, Napoleon requested to be shown reviewing the troops
but eventually decided on a scene showing him crossing the Alps.

. Assessment Task 6-2

Watch the BBC documentary about Botticelli’s Venus: The Making of an Icon from
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b070sqb0. Write a reflection paper regarding the said documentary.

‘’REFLECTION PAPER’’
This documentary shows Sam Roddick insight on how Botticelli created her masterpiece with conducting
guide information from the expert persons. Sam Roddick explores the enduring appeal of Botticelli's
masterpiece The Birth of Venus, and explains why Botticelli's nude was so revolutionary and explores its

m
impact on contemporary culture with artists such as Terry Gilliam who memorably reinvented Venus for

er as
his Monty Python's Flying Circus animations. The painting shows the triumphant Goddess of Love and

co
Beauty. he seems to draw all attention to women’s; a symbol of beauty, who is both physical and

eH w
spiritual. In the painting, Venus is born of sea foam and standing on a cockle shell. Zhephyrus, god of the

o.
west wind, carries goddess Chloris and blows Venus to Cyprus, her sacred island. The goddess is standing

rs e
on a giant scallop shell, as pure and as perfect as a pearl. She is met by a young woman, who is
ou urc
sometimes identified as one of the Graces or as the Hora of spring, and who holds out a cloak covered in
flowers. Even the roses, blown in by the wind are a reminder of spring. The subject of the painting,
which celebrates Venus as a symbol of love and beauty, was perhaps suggested by the poet Agnolo
o

Poliziano.
aC s

It is all about the discovery of Botticelli's masterpiece and how he came up with this wonderful painting.
vi y re

Venus from Botticelli's painting became an inspiration of every generation to create another twist with
Venus which is the idolization of female sexuality. Botticelli’s painting continues to open to each
generation, and today’s remains alive from the heart of many people. And I reflect in this documentary
ed d

video that painting is not just a painting, if we look at the deepest side of the picture, we will learn how
ar stu

to understand because our mind is open and ready to adopt and explore our imaginations.

For me, I can’t say the real meaning of this picture with the first look, because I can see the many sides
of stories inside the artwork so it's hard for me to analyze the story at that artwork and behind that
is

work. Botticelli takes his inspiration from classical statues for Venus’ modest pose, as she covers her
Th

nakedness with long, blond hair, which has reflections of light from the fact that it has been gilded; even
the Winds, the pair flying in one another’s embrace, is based on an ancient work, a gem from the
Hellenistic period, owned by Lorenzo the Magnificent. This artwork is Not just as a symbol of sublime,
feminine beauty but a worldwide icon; reproduced, modified, imitated and reflected on in the work of
sh

countless artists, fashion designers, graphic artists, advertising directors and film-makers.

I realized that artists and their artwork has had the biggest impact before and until now, it helps to
empower women to be strong and not shame them for who they are. And the painting shows a
humanistic theme because it focuses on the birth of love shown by the female in the Center of the
painting.
