1. SCOPE OF WORK
This method statement describes the procedure for installation of HVAC
system duct & duct accessories at below buildings.
To ensure that the installation of HVAC duct & duct accessories and
related activities are executed safely and in accordance with the
contract requirements and that all quality assurance control activities
required for the same are conducted in a systematic manner, Works are
inspected and conformance is verified and documented.

2. STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS


• The work under the all sections shall comply with June, 2016 Edition of
the applicable standards and codes of the following:

• ASHRAE - American society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning


Engineers
• SWCC Specification reference number QA10-G-008 Rev.3
• ASTM - American society of Testing and Materials
• NFPA- National Fire Protection Association
• UL - Underwriters Laboratories
• SMACNA - Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors

Association.

Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Manager
• PM will be responsible for the over-all work involved in the project works.
QA/QC Manager
• Responsible for the overall distribution and implementation of this
procedure
Construction Manager
• Responsible for the works execution and implementation of this procedure
at Fabrication Shop and Field.
Safety Supervisor/Safety Officer
• Prepares Risk Assessments and Daily Task Risk Assessments,
recognizes the hazards and all the control measures to arrest the hazards
are done prior to start of work.
• Line Supervisor and safety officer to conduct Daily Task Risk
Assessment and Risk Assessment with the employees and make sure
that they understand the hazards and risk involved and the necessary
measures which needs to be taken to mitigate the risk before work
starts.
• Responsible for ensuring that all safety requirements necessary to start
these activities is provided by the construction group as per project HSE
manual / requirements and specifications.
• Conducts inspection to ensure that all safety requirements are being
maintained up to the completion of this activity.
• Carry daily tool box talks and prepares necessary documents and reports.
• To report any safety violation to HSE Supervisor and HSE Manager in
order to take corrective action.
• HSE supervisor to visit the site and attend meeting as and when
required.

4.WITNESS INSTALLED ITEMS

1. HVAC system installation shall be subject to test and inspection


under witness by the QC. Inspector and/ or Owner's representative
(PID) at any reasonable time and place before, during and after
installation.
2. Installation of duct work shall be in accordance with this procedure.

5. EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS & TOOLS


The materials, types, performance requirement, finishes, etc., shall be
as approved in relevant documents.
The following equipment shall be installed as per this method statement.

• G.I rectangular duct


• Duct Accessories (Dampers, Grills & Diffusers)
• G.I supports
• Package air conditioning units(PACU )
• Air handling units(AHU )
• Ventilation fans.
• Sand trap louvers
• Fan coil units_(FCU) and sp lit units.
• Insulation materials
• Duct electric heaters

The following materials/tools will be used to carry out task for HVAC
system.

6. METHOD STATEMENTS (QA10-G-008 Rev.3)

6.1 HANDLING AND STORAGE:

• All Duct pieces (i.e. duct sections of rectangular, square, circular) C-


cleats shall be fabricated in FACTORY as per approved material
equipped with special purpose computer numerical
controlled (CNC) machinery and special purpose tools.
• All duct section shall be fabricated I joined as per SMACNA standard
I design drawing details.
• On receipt of ducts and accessories at site, necessary precautions
shall be taken for unloading, shifting and storage as follows:

o Materials received at site will be inspected and ensure that the


materials are as per approved material submittals.
o Any ductworks (rectangular I square I circular) delivered at site
will be carefully offloaded by deploying necessary I
adequate dedicated manpower for loading and unloading
materials in
such a way that no damage is caused to ductwork.
• Any part of the galvanised ductwork, where the galvanising has been cut
or damaged during manufacture or erection, shall be cleaned down to
bright metal and painted two coats of aluminium, zinc or other
corrosion-resisting paint
o Ducts and accessories will be stored in a place free of water,
dust and adequately covered.
o It will be ensured that the fabricated duct pieces are numbered
or tagged as per latest approved drawing to avoid wrong
connections during assembly or installation and to expedite
assembly works.
o All insulation material will be stored in a dry place and adequate
cover will be provided.

• Any discrepancies, damage etc., found will be notified and will be


reported for further action.
• Materials found not suitable for site will be removed from site
immediately.
• Duct Sealant, adhesive, gasket, ducts & etc. shall be stored in
enclosed areas as per Manufacturer's recommendations. Also attach
or include the Manufacturer's recommendations & Product data sheet
limitations where applicable to the material.

6.2 DUCT HANGERS AND SUPPORT INSTALLATION:

• Secure all necessary permit-to-works prior to start of HVAC works.


• Work Supervisor will conduct safety briefing on all workers.
• Clear floor in respective building where G.I duct to be installed.
• Supports for rectangular ducts when suspended from above shall be
installed on two opposite side of each duct.
• Supports for rectangular ducts shall be riveted, bolted, or metal
screwed to each side of the duct at not more than the intervals
specified.
• Concrete fasteners shall be installed after the concrete has been
poured and the form works have been removed.
• The Support system shall not penetrate enclosures containing fluid
or electrical wiring in such a manner to create a hazard.
• Horizontal duct shall have a Support within 1.2 m of each branch
intersection.
• Rectangular duct risers from floor shall be supported by angles or
channels secured to the sides of duct with welds, bolts, sheet metal
screws, or blind rivets. Fasteners shall be located within 0.05 m of
the duct edges, locate others at evenly spaced interval.
• Angles shall be at 3.6 m intervals for rectangular and round duct
risers.
• All duct hanger & supports details shall be according to the
drawing.

6.3 INSTALLATION OF HVAC DUCT:

• Prior to installation of ducts, coordinate with other trades/ discip line will
be done.
• Secure all necessary permit-to-works prior to start of HVAC works.
• Work Supervisor will conduct safety briefing on all workers.
• Clear floor in respective building where G.I duct to be installed.
• Transport the duct pieces and fittings to final location.
• Duct pieces will be installed and joined together as declared on approved
drawing.
• Assembled ducts will be fitted manually and will be installed on
supports. Similarly the next length of duct will be installed and two are
joined together by means of suitable C-cleats, S-cleats or flanges with
gasket and tied GI nut bolts and washers.
• The ducts will be properly aligned and leveled to maintain bottom of duct
(B.O.D) and distances as per approved drawing.
• Wherever branch take off collars are to be taken, suitable cutout will be
made in the ducts.
• Approved duct sealant shall be applied on the joints. Any excess sealant
shall be removed so that the joint is left in clean and tidy condition.
• Ensure that the ductwork is clean and no tools/construction debris
exists within ductwork before proceeding to next length.
• All open ends of the ductwork shall be temporarily sealed with polyth en e
sheets before leavin g the job site to prevent ingress of moisture and dirt.
• Installation of duct work shall be checked, inspected and tested before
applying thermal insulation at ductwork joints.
• All building exhausts shall be direct ly to the outside with a point of
discharge of at least 1.5 m away from any open able window or door, and
a minimum of 1m above and 3m horizont ally away from any air intake.
• Metal ducting shall be groun ded, provide jumpers at flexible connection
in HVAC room.
• Joints, seams and fittings of duct systems shall be made substantially
airtight by means of tapes, mastic, gasket or other approved methods.
• If air leakages in ducts located outside of buildings are exposed to
weather, they shall receive exterior duct sealant.
• Seal class C shall be provide d for 0.05 m w.g pressure class duct
Construction. Class C: Transverse joints only.
• Installation of duct shall be done with proper alignment.
• All duct work shall comply with SMACNA standards suitable for 0.05 m
w.g pressure class.
• All ducts shall be thoroughly cleaned before assembling. All open ends shall be
sealed with polythene covers at all times during construction. All joints shall be
sealed with an approved mastic and taped externally to make an air -tight joint. All
flanges shall be fitted with gaskets.
• All connections to equipment shall be made with angle-flange joints.
• Where ducts penetrate any structural wall or slab, they shall be sleeved and 25 mm
thick rock wool inserted between the sleeve and the duct. Any gaps between the
sleeve and the structure shall be sealed with heavy grout and finished with a dense
mastic. All ductwork shall be airtight according to DIN EN 1507 Class B or
equivalent

Material Specifications: Material Confirms to: ASTM A653


Material: Galvanized Iron sheets LF Quality.
Zinc Coating: G-90.
Thickness: As per General Construction Drawings.

6.4 DUCT TESTING PROCEDURE (LIGHT TEST/SMOKE TEST):

• Below procedure explains light test for low pressure ducts.


• Select a section of duct to be tested.
• Light test shall be perform ed in sections prior to insulation.
• The light test shall be perform e d with heavy duty halogen lamps (500 or
1000 Watts lamps).
• Test light shall be fixed at the ends of the stick with enough length to
reach the farthest joint to be tested.
• Position the light inside the duct in the area of joints to be tested.
• Check the outer side of the duct area or joint being tested for any
visibility/leak of light from inside.
• If any leak found, seal the area and repeat the test.
Smoke Test: -
• Ensure to close all the duct joints with proper duct sealant to avoid the
chance of leakage, avoid splattering of the sealant in the joints.
• Dampers can be used to isolate the area which need to be tested,
• Run the Smoke Fane for 15 Minutes to pressurize the Smoke (time
Depen d on the Duct length and size).
• Scaffoldin g will be provided to access the ducts
• The end of line shall be opening to confirm. the smoke reach to all the
branches.
• Check at every joint- the Smoke from outside shall not be visible.
• If any defects found, the point shall be marked and then rectified sealed
after finishing the test
• After rectification, the test to be repeated;
• Test to be done for each section of the duct

6.5 PACKAGED AIR CONDITIONING UNITS (PACU) AND AIR HANDLING


UNITS(AHU):

• Install the unit's level on structural curbs. Coordinate wall penetrations


and flashing with wall construction. Secure PACU's & AHU to structural
supports with anchor bolts.
• Provide spring vibration isolators under the PACU & AHU for vibration
control.
• Install condensate drain, minimum connection size, with trap siphon tee
fitting and indirect connection to nearest roof drain or area drain.
• Connect the supply and return ducts to PACU & AHU with
flexible duct connectors.

6.6 SPLIT-SYSTEM AIR CONDITIONERS

• Install the unit's level and plumb.

• Install evaporator fan components using manufacturer's standard


mounting devices securely fastened to building structure.
• Install ground mounted, compressor c-condenser components on the pre
cast concrete equipment bases. Rubber pad vibration isolators can be
used to avoid vibration.
6.7 INSULATION OF DUCTWORK:

• Installation of duct work (com plet e with accessories) shall be checked,


inspected and light tested before applying insulation.
• Clean the surface of the duct to remove dust and grease.
• Spread adhesive at the surface of the duct.
• For large ducts of width more than 0.5 m, flx stuck up pins at regular intervals.
Apply adhesive to the surface of the duct and fix insulation firmly
in position. Insert stoppers over the pins to hold insulation firmly to the
duct. Bend the pin to lock stopper in position and seal with 3mm thick
aluminum tape.
• When insulating dampers, ensure that the handle is not covered by the
insulation to permit opening and closing of dampers. Ensu re Access doors
are not covered fully and are easy to open/close.
• Indoor duct and outdoor duct will be insulated as per Project specification.
• Material Specifications:

b) Material: Fiberglass Insulation - Board Insulation (Vapor retardant
aluminum foil reinforce d Kraft paper laminate-FRK).
c) Densit y minimu m 48 kgfm3
d) Thickness: 25mm (Indoor) & SOmm (Outdoo r), Outdoor duct
insulation -shall be cladded with 0.8mm thick aluminum jackets.
e) Make: AFICO

6.8 FLEXIBLE DUCTS:

• Flexible ducts shall be installed in accordance with SMACNA standard.


• The bends of the flexible ducts shall not exceed 45 Degrees.
• The length of the flexible duct shall not exceed 1.5 meters.
• The flexible ducts shall be supported every 1.5 meters (max.) to avoid it
from sagging and touching the false ceiling.

6.9 GRILLS AND DIFFUSERS:

• Grills and registers shall be installed with self-tapping screws to the wall
or to the ducts as per shop drawings.
• Supply grills or registers shall be installed with collar from branch.
• Return grills or registers shall be installed without volume dampers.
• Supply ceiling diffusers shall be installed with plenum box and volum e
damper on the branch, the type of the diffusers shall be in accord an c e wit h
the false ceilin g.
• Return ceiling diffusers shall be the same model with the supply diffusers.

• Air Terminal Devices shall be mounted at locations shown on approved


Drawings.
• Air terminal devices shall not be installed directly on the main ducts.
• Air terminal devices shall be connected to main ducts with Branch
ducts having a minimum length of two duct sizes.

6. 10 FIRE & SMOKE DAMPERS:

• The fire dampers shall be installed in accordance with


manufacturer's recommendation.
• Access doors shall be minimum of 300 x 300_mm opening shall
be provided on each fire damper to reach the blade for maintenance
purpose.
• The location of the fire dampers shall be as specified in the approved
shop drawings.
• Type of duct connection to Fire Damper sleeve shall be
breakaway connection.
• Adequate space f opening is provided for restoring the damper
(when done manually) in its normal operating condition. (SMACNA
Appendix E).
• Retaining angle shall be secured to sleeve on 8" centers. Retaining
angles shall not be fixed to the walls.
• Clearance of the damper sleeves within a wall shall be 0.03 mjft
of width (or Height).
• Before installation visual inspection of damper and fusible link will
be done.
• Lift or handle damper using sleeve or frame.
• Damper must be installed into duct or opening square and free of
twist or other misalignment.
• Fire/smoke damper should be installed in fire rated Wall, floors
and partitions.
• Duct Access doors will be provided for internal Access to all frre/
smoke damper for sizes bigger than 300 mm width of the duct.

6. 11 VOLUME DAMPERS & BACK DRAFT DAMPERS INSTALLATION:
