Part 1:
All these pings were run from a computer located in the U.S. What
happens to the average ping time in
milliseconds when data is traveling within the same continent (North
America) as compared to data from North America traveling to
different continents?
- The further you ping a website from where the computer locate,
the higher the average ping will be.

Part 2:
First Attempt connected to www.cisco.com
Second Attempt connected to www.afrinic.net
Third Attempt connected to www.lacnic.net
What happens at hop 7? Is level3.net the same ISP as hops 2-6, or a
different ISP?
- At hop 7 in afrinic, the domain name chage to level3.net.
- It is all the same ISP with domain name level3.net, it just shows
the different routers from different cities at each hop.

What happens in hop 10 to the amount of time it takes for a packet to

travel between Washington D.C. and Paris, as compared with hops 1-9?
- The time is increased, because the distance between the home
router and the router from different places does affect to the
time, the longer the distance is, the later the time is.
What happens in hop 18? Do a Whois lookup on 168.209.201.74 using
the Whois tool. Who owns this network?
- At hop 18 it took even longer for a packet to travel to its router
- Whois does look up on the following IP, South Africa Cape Town
Dimension Data owns the network.

Part 3:
Tracepath using subnetonline.com

Trace www.cisco.com

Trace www.afrinic.net
Question 1 : How is the traceroute different when going to
www.cisco.com from the command prompt (see Part 1) rather than
from the online website? (Your results may vary depending upon where
you are located geographically, and which ISP is providing connectivity
to your school.)

- The Traceroute from the Website went to a server in German.

And the Traceroute from the Command Promt went to a server in

Argentina.
Question 2 : Compare the tracert from Part 1 that goes to Africa with
the tracert that goes to Africa from the web interface. What difference
do you notice?
- The tracert from the Part 1 takes more Hop than the tracert from the
Web. This I think depends alot on the Internet Provider.

Question 3 : Some of the traceroutes have the abbreviation asymm in

them. Any guesses as to what this means? What is its significance?
- asymm means the the path to the hop and back have been different.
This can happen when the way back of the packet is jammed and the
network encourages different paths for the different directions.
