Oncology is

the specialized branch of medicine devoted to the field of cancer including

diagnosis, treatments, and researches. The term oncology literally means a branch of
science that deals with tumors and cancers. The word “onco” means bulk, mass, or tumor while
“-logy” means study. Doctors who treat cancer patients are known as oncologists. Cancer
treatment involves various medical procedures and hence, requires a specialty team Oncology
nurses care for cancer patients, serving as their first line of communication, and helping to
coordinate the many aspects of their care throughout cancer treatment.

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to destroy cancer cells. It usually works by keeping the
cancer cells from growing, dividing, and making more cells. Because cancer cells usually grow
and divide faster than normal cells, chemotherapy has more of an effect on cancer cells.
Chemotherapy refers to the use of any drug to treat any disease. But to most people, the word
chemotherapy (or "chemo") means drugs used for cancer treatment. It's important to know that
not all medicines and drugs to treat cancer work the same way. It used to be that the only kind
of drug that could treat cancer was traditional or standard chemo, but now there are a lot of
different kinds of drugs used to treat cancer. While traditional or standard chemotherapy is still
the best way to treat many cancers, different kinds of drugs may work better for others.

Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses beams of intense energy to kill cancer
cells. Radiation therapy most often uses X-rays, but protons or other types of energy also can
be used.
The term "radiation therapy" most often refers to external beam radiation therapy. During this
type of radiation, the high-energy beams come from a machine outside of your body that aims
the beams at a precise point on your body. During a different type of radiation treatment called
brachytherapy (brak-e-THER-uh-pee), radiation is placed inside your body.
Radiation therapy damages cells by destroying the genetic material that controls how cells grow
and divide. While both healthy and cancerous cells are damaged by radiation therapy, the goal
of radiation therapy is to destroy as few normal, healthy cells as possible. Normal cells can often
repair much of the damage caused by radiation.
