Ordinal numbers
Ordinal numbers normally show the order or the sequence of something. Normally we create ordinal numbers
adding (th) to the end of the cardinal numbers
1. We use ordinal numbers when giving a date}
Example:
- Her birthday is on the 29th (twenty- ninth)
- Independence Day is celebrated on fourth of July
2. We use ordinal numbers when we want to show the order or position of something in a
sequence
Example:
- Woodward united finished second in the league last year
- I came third in the race
- This is the fifth time it has happened
3. We use ordinal number to express the number of a floor in a building
Example:
- Our office is on the ninth floor
- Her apartment is on the second floor
4. We use ordinal numbers when we want to say the total number of years we are celebrating
Example:
- A person is 15th birthday is an important even in Mexico
- Today is their 20th wedding anniversary
- We had a huge party for his twenty- first birthday
5. We use ordinal numbers to express the century that something happened
Example:
- Shakespeare was born in the 16th century
- The renaissance was a period in European history from the 14th to the 17th century
6. For the name of a king or queen in written English roman numeral are used however they are
said as ordinal numbers in spoken English.
Example:
- Henry VIII (Henry the Eighth)
