WHAT I CAN DO

There are various Filipinos that dominate poems and other artistic works that have been
recorded on hard copy. While researching Filipino creators in Mindanao, I came across
one that caught my attention. Her drive, which was captured as a hard copy abstract
work, captivated me. Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz is a Palanca award-winning author
currently residing in Davao City.

Whatever the case may be, who exactly is Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz?

She teaches semantics, writing, and exploratory writing at the University of the
Philippines Mindanao's Department of Humanities. De La Salle University awarded her
a Master of Arts in Language and Literature and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative
Writing, both with honors. She and her two children currently reside in Davao City.
Jhoanna Lynn Cruz is the president of the Davao Writers Guild and the National
Committee on Literary Arts' territorial facilitator for Southern Mindanao.
Cruz used to tell herself constantly when she was younger that she should become an
author later in life because she felt she had something to say and express her
experiences as a woman should have been verbalized in a creative way to contribute to
change in our male-dominated culture. Unfortunately, she began writing because she
needed a different/alternative way to express her private feelings about sex and
sexuality, and it altered her life when many people appreciated her work, and
eventually, writing became her addiction.

Women Loving: Stories and a Play (Anvil Publishing, 2010), Jhoanna Lynn B Cruz's first
book, is the Philippines' most important single-author collection of lesbian-themed
writing. Her writing has received the prestigious Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for
Literature in the Philippines. Similarly, Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz (UPMin Prof., Humanities
Dept., CHSS) won the Third Prize in the Essay Category of the 58th Carlos Palanca
Memorial Awards for Literature for her exposition "Sapay Koma." Her most recent
scholarly work was a sonnet titled "Agua de Viuda," which she read on June 26th of this
year.

Jhoanna Cruz performs "Agua De Viuda," a new sonnet she wrote. I was tremendously
propelled and moved by the story when I read her piece "Sapay Koma." Her life turned
out to be difficult and upsetting in light of the fact that her significant other and the social
barrier between them caused a severe breakup in their relationship, but she remained
strong, demonstrating that everything happens for a reason, no matter how grim the
conclusion.
