Assignment 1 - Guidelines - 2021
Description
1. Students are asked to analysis one precedent (Unwin, 2012) by explaining the thinking style of
the architect when defining his/her design idea (generating process) from its domain
knowledge.
2. Students must explain the moving knowledge explicitly from one domain or discipline into
another while maintaining important relational content in the design proposal (first principles
or domain to domain transfer) based on precedent analysis.
3. Students are expected to explain the logic argument supported by literature/references.
Purpose
The main purpose of the Assignment 1 is to understand how the architect generates their idea by
thinking differently and creating possibilities of richness during the design process/informational
level of design activities through exploring situation, context, and/or content for opportunities,
issues, or concerns (both Divergent and convergent thinking).
Required Materials
1. Written in English.
2. The e-book of Simon Unwin (2014) Twenty-Five Buildings Every Architect Should
Understand [2 ed.] OR you can download at itsclassroom (references)
3. A group of 5 students (max.) and each group uses different precedent from others (25
precedent examples in Unwin, 2014). Each student has to contribute in teamwork (state your
name in which discussion you have contributed)
4. Presentation format: PPT (max 6 slides), attractive, simple, and clear. You can use diagram,
sketch, pictures, graphic and etc to explain the idea.
5. Presentation/booklet style: free, interactive, attractive, communicative (using various
media). The content of the report must follow the description mentioned above.
6. Report format: B5 paper landscape/portrait format (No minimum number of pages are asked).
Important note: your report/booklet is not your PPT format. We will give minus point if you do
that.
7. Title of the report: ASSIGNMENT 1_ALL STUDENTS’ ID NUMBER.
8. All references (include images) cited must be written by citing (quoting) them on the list of
references. Including all diagram, pictures, sketches etc from references/internet must
include the data source.
